quote:Don't feel bad. My wife and I were both born and raised in NOLA. It was like that far back as I remember. Always pricey housing for young couples. Even pre-Katrina. Old dilapidated fixer-upper houses in Gentilly off Franklin were ridiculous. Plus it was virtually impossible to get financing in the city back in the 1970s unless you were independently wealthy. God knows we tried. Thank God we didn't succeed. This was the time of the first great migration to Slidell, when great new starter home subdivisions were going up and financing was available. Also to Chalmette/St. Bernard (where we opted to go for family and job reasons). We wanted to live in NOLA, but its ridiculous prices and walls of defense built up against ready financing shut its doors on us.
We saw what our friends who lived in the Nashville area got and realized we were being hardheaded and dumb by not making or money go 10x as far. If Nola figured it out like they have here though I would move back in a heartbeat
Since then we've left Chalmette (1984), moved outside of LA, and have owned 2500-3000 sq ft. homes in KY, GA, and FL. These would still be untouchable $$$-wise in NOLA, but we could get good pricing and ready financing without hassle and red tape (and the usual NOLA BS).
Our daughter and son in law are about to move to a Dallas suburb - you should see the nice 3000+ square foot newer homes they can get for a very reasonable price! And in nice middle/upscale neighborhoods.
In my experience, NOLA has never made it easy for young couples to get a start. Except for the wealthy ones, that is. Let the middle class beware.
