couple of things have helped me in the past:
-cut back on caffeine in the afternoon. i used to be an all-day coffee drinker, and if i didn't have first hand experience with it i'd read this statement and call bullshite. but it really worked for me.
-get enough exercise.
-cut back on the booze during the week at least.
-also i used to switch from the bed to the couch (and back if necessary) if i lied awake for more than about 30 minutes. for some reason that helped break up the mental train of thought that i'd build up just thinking about shite when i can't sleep.
