I'd say 2.5, but I can have our biologist look at it for you if you'd like, he's pretty good at it

It's not that important, we're going to shoot it if we get a chance. If not one of the other members will end up taking it. I would love to see him in another year or 2.

Private. I'm looking at some timber land for next year a little farther north.

that is a 2.5

that belly starts to sag a little more at 3.5

he is a damn good deer, his horns are outkicking the coverage. It would benefit the whole club if you shot him after he went to the no pants dance.

I don't trust the guys in my lease not to shoot him, so if he came within 600 yds of me, he would be legs up.

The temps are nice there, it's typically 3-5 degrees cooler there than in Houston. And it not but maybe 25-30 miles north.

3.5 would have more of a boxed torso appearance with much shorter appearing legs. Notice the "race horse" appearance of this deer. He has a tapered waist also. This is a fine 2.5 in my opinion.

I think it's funny the guys on here that can't tell the age of a summer deer. If you look at the brisket and it's saggy, it's over 2.5yo. It's belly is starting to drop and back is starting to sway.

I would guess he's 3.5yo but could easily be a 4.5yo.

Yeah as in there is no way in hell that deer is 2.5yo. The body difference for 3.5 to 4.5 is not that great.

quote:

3-1/2-year-old Bucks in the 3-1/2-year-old age class are typically described as having a “thoroughbred” appearance due to their toned body characteristics. A buck in this class has a muscular body, a chest that is slightly deeper than its rump, and a taut stomach. During the breeding season, a 3-1/2-year-old exhibits a moderately swollen neck. On average, 3-1/2-year-old bucks have reached about 75 percent of their maximum antler size.

I don't know the genetics of his area and looking at the horns tells me they are not the full potential of that deer. So I guessed 3.5yo BUT.

quote:

A 4-1/2-year-old buck has a thick, muscular body with taut skin and legs that appear to be proportional to its body. The buck’s stomach appears to sag slightly, but its back remains straight. During the rut, the neck of a 4-1/2-year-old buck becomes very swollen. A 4-1/2-year-old buck’s body has reached physiological maturity, and its antlers have reached about 90 percent of their maximum potential.
