Could be heat, drivers, power delivery issues, only way to know is to check temperatures, reinstall chipset drivers, and try to reproduce the issue. Facebook uses a good bit of Flash that's known to cause problems with certain drivers, particularly in AMD cards.
As far as getting a new laptop, I'd consider this ASUS to be pretty versatile for light gaming: LINK
I may be overestimating what kind of Steam games you'd play. Browser games are a non-issue. You may be more interested in something like this LINK , which can function as a tablet. Those are both ASUS laptops, purely by coincidence. I was just picking a sampling of options. There are so many choices in the $600-$1000 range that it would be impossible to find the "right" one. In that price range, look for:
8GB RAM minimum
1920x1080 resolution
Intel i5 or i7, or AMD A10
And as I always say, consider lowering budget and spending some on an SSD to replace or amend the HDD.

arrives on Thursday.
saw an HP Envy with the same specs at BB for $699, but wanted to try something besides an HP.
Mulling the decision to put an ssd in it, but might see how it runs first. Still need to put Microsoft Office on it.
Played L4D2 on this machine last night w/o problems but can't wait to have a faster machine
