Not sure I get you, exactly. There has not been a "steady" decrease in anything to now, even if one arbitrarily chooses the absolute summit of wealth, per capita income, standard of living, or any other point as the baseline.

And in the longer-term picture (like compared to previous generations), we remain damn near the historical peak, although there are smaller cycles around the overall trend. But even at the nadir of this last recession, we were still relatively close to the top historically.
