My assumption for firing in season is to get a jump start in the hiring process. If you don't envision him as the manager for next season why not pull the string now? You get first pick of managers available.

Two springs ago, Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow gathered his players to introduce his new manager, Bo Porter.
That very day, some players foresaw trouble.
"It was extremely uncomfortable being in that room," one remembered.
Players and coaches remember a weird dynamic between the two men.
"Bo kept interrupting Jeff," one player said. "He seemed to think he was the boss. If you'd been there, you would have known it wasn't going to work."

Yup, 2 men enter...1 man leave. I guess Lunhow won his first thunderdome.

If you even remotely pay attention, you would know that this move is not stupid at all.

Here is my take on the Porter issue. I think Porter is a good baseball guy but not manager material. He'd be a good long term base coach but not the head chief. Problem for us is we went cheap on the manager last time around and lets face it we didn't have the a+ candidates breaking down the door either. We got the guy we knew we could get no problem. Porter made questionable pitching moves and stuck with guys that should have been benched and took guys out too early. He also lacked that fire that I think a manager needs. I mean we don't need a Lou Pinella type but someone who isn't afraid to go out there and give it to the umps every once and a while and shows more emotions in the clubhouse. I know Porter didn't have anywhere near a Major League roster to work with but he didn't develop and get the best out of what he had all the time. It's always sad to see a manager get fired but shite happens and lets hope Crain and Luhnow have a plan. Word is Nolan, Reid, and Biggio will all have input on the next hire.

Luhnow is a clown. So is Porter. And Crane.
That's three clowns.
That's three clowns.

This bunch isn't ready for Lou Pinella or someone similar.
