Seems like we get ourselves into more trouble supporting the Saudis than we would if we just conquered them and took their oil.

So much bullshite to keep them in power so we have a "friend" with all the oil, and they outright support our mortal enemies in extremist Sunnis throughout the ME.

We conquer the weak Saudis, in the process making nice with their enemies in Iran, an then all is well, no?

We do not conquer anyone - we can but don't. Never been our style.

How would we "conquer" Saudi Arabia? Have you not been paying attention the last 20 years or so? We create more enemies in the ME than we vanquish when we use military force. What right do we have to take their oil or rule over their country (which would be a nightmare).

The FAR better question is why can't the US move toward energy independence.

compare the cost of invading and occupying vs. simply buying their oil, and get back to us

Because international law says we can't, and we always obey international law. Except when we choose not to obey international law.

Seriously, have you read the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution? Which parts of those documents inspire in you a desire to conquer the Arabian peninsula? We tend to purchase territory instead of conquering it.

Conquer Saudi Arabia? Seriously? Just like in Iraq, the military campaign will be an overwhelming success. Saudi Arabia houses a tremendous number of Muslim fundamentalists who would then engage in an insurgency that would make Iraq look like a cakewalk. Foreign extremists would pour in. It would literally be one of the dumbest things this country could ever do.

Saudi Arabia's oil reserve figures have been fudged for decades, FYI

Why would the US just invade the Arabian peninsula? I can think of very few worse ideas.

If you think the insurgency in Iraq was bad, an insurgency in Saudi Arabia would absolutely frick our military up.

Invading and destroying a country is easy, occupying and maintaining a country is quite another different animal entirely and that animal would eat us alive.

Buying their oil is the safest, cheapest and most low risk option there is.

Umm... conquering Mecca and Medina would be bad on a whole different level-- it would radicalize millions of relatively moderate Muslims-- you want to see US embassies burn across Asia do this.
