So let's say Brees goes down for two or three games. In a tight playoff race, a game could make the difference. You'd rather just have the less-prepared guy out there just because?

Exactly. I know the Packers wished they had a better back up last year.

The best teams are the ones that prepare for the most contingencies.

But I agree that McCown looks to be the best #2 QB we have right now. You go with who gives you the best chance to win right now. That's just how football works.

I hope you're right...but I don't think so.

I agree with Sid; I think Payton goes with McCown. When in doubt, go with experience. Griffin has been regressing the last few weeks and doesn't look very comfortable in the pocket.

Admittedly I did not get to watch last night's game, but based off of the the first 3 games to me Griffin held the edge for the #2 job.....I've seen a lot of people say last week that Griffin had a bad game, which yes he was off a bit, but so was McCown, wasn't he like 3 for 10?...And after seeing the highlights from last night yes McCown was 4-4, but they looked like all short high completion throws.......It is close, but to me Griffin is #2

Yeah, I'm with you man. I missed the game last night so I'm left wondering what the hell happened for Griffin to get overtaken by McCown. Griffin seemed like an obvious #2 from the first 3 games.

IMO Griffin didn't look that good last week. He followed that up with a very weak performance last night. The confidence he showed in the first 2 games has given way to a typical second year QB...very jittery in the pocket.

What has McCown done? Last week and last night, McCown made excellent moves to avoid pressure and completed passes. It was just a few plays, but it showed he doesn't get rattled. Griffin was just the opposite.

ETA: The most obvious sign of regression came late in the game, Cooks had 4 steps on the defender in a deep crossing route and Griffin had adequate protection. Griffin got jittery in the pocket and missed a wide open Cooks by 5 yards. It's only one play, but that's not a good sign.

I hate it when people say this. Yeah, if he goes down for the year we're screwed. But there are plenty of injuries that could temporarily sideline him where you need a guy to come in and win a few games for you.

it's not so much how Griffin played, which wasn't good enough to win the job...but that McCown was 4-4 with a TD and then done for the night.

The pitch count made it clear that McCown isn't going anywhere, imo.

I can agree with that. Seems like CSP already knows what he has with McCown and was trying to find out about Griffin

I have to admit that the move could be interpreted a few ways. I kinda lean towards the school of though that McCown wrapped up the #2 spot.

Griffin looked really good against St. Louis and not so good against Baltimore. Both have had good camps. It seems to have really benefited McCown with the increased reps due to Brees' injury. I doubt Griffin lasts through waivers. St. Louis tried to sign him away last year.

The Griffin experiment should be over, unless he clears waivers and gets on the PS. McCown is a serviceable backup in case Drew is out for a short time.

I thought he looked his best against the Titans.

had like 3 of his passes dropped in that game including one by Cooks that would have been a TD.

i think he improved some from last year.

But McCown looked pretty tough. He did what he had to do and didn't back down after some tough hits last night.
