It's not that difficult to say go to the post office if you want your stamp today.

Like telling people it's state law that requires them to see your driver's license to make returns.

FYI, e-stamps are only good in the states that are part of the program (9 of them I think). It isn't valid in a nonparticipating state until you get the printed one in the mail.

That is not true. The receipt you get from states selling E-stamps is the Federal Duck Stamp for 45 days or until you receive the actual stamp. You can hunt in ANY state with that receipt.

See here for links to the participating states:

There are other sites that sell federal duck stamps, like art galleries or stamp vendors. These are not E-stamps, and you can NOT use those receipts for hunting.

That's how I understood it. My paper stamp is good for 45 days or until my stamp comes in the mail.

Reynolds...wasn't hating on Feds. I think the employee at cabelas just really misinformed me. She actually said, "we had stamps but govt made us send them back and this how all federal duck stamps will be issued this year"

I think so, too. I think the E-stamp makes it so they don't have to purchase stamps themselves and keep them on hand for re-sale to customers. They can just sell the E-stamp. The "govt" certainly didn't make them send and stamps back!

I would want to be told that they didn't have actual stamps before agreeing to purchase an E-stamp. I much prefer getting the stamp to put on my license right away rather than having to carry a paper receipt into the field for some period of time.

As per my experience last year with my brother, the E-stamp has a real convenience factor under certain circumstances. But it's not my preference in most cases.

After last season, I won't allow myself to be optimistic again ...... but I've heard some good reports from a few of our wood-duck banders about a few decent bunches in ag fields. I'll fly the September survey starting the 8th, weather permitting.

I honestly hadn't thought about it until this thread, but it all makes perfect sense from the retailers point of view.

When I started duck hunting in the early-70's the ONLY place you could buy a federal Duck Stamp was the Post Office. You couldn't buy your hunting license and your federal Duck Stamp at the same place. That was why the federal Harvest Survey sampling was based on a random selection of Post Offices where hunters who bought their Duck Stamps were given a contact card to send to the USFWS to be part of the sample.

That sampling method started falling apart in the late-80's and 90's when retailers began buying federal Duck Stamps and re-selling them so their customers could get everything they needed to go duck hunting in 1 stop. But they didn't want to buy too many, because they would be stuck with them, so sometimes my license seller would have them, and sometimes they wouldn't. By the late-90's the vast majority of hunters were buying their federal Duck Stamps from some place other than a Post Office, the sampling frame for the Harvest Surveys fell apart, and anti-hunting organizations prepared lawsuits against the USFWS to stop the duck season because of "inadequate harvest information". That was why the HIP program was implemented so that a representative list of all migratory bird hunters could be sampled for the Harvest Surveys.

Now, here comes the E-stamp, whose purpose was to add convenience to anyone and everyone who wanted to buy Duck Stamps for whatever purpose. Have you ever been at Sherburne for the South Farm Lottery hunt, and some guy doesn't has his Duck Stamp? That was (is) no problem with a WMA permit or his state Duck License ..... LDWF could sell him that on-line. But not having a federal Duck Stamp meant he couldn't hunt, until the E-stamp. Great idea at 4:30 am!

I hadn't thought about the added convenience to license retailers. Now, they don't have to buy federal Duck Stamps for resale to their customers or send them somewhere else; they just have to hit another button on their point-of-sale license workstation (or however it is done). So if I was running those operations, I would discontinue having the actual stamp on hand as well if I had the opportunity to shift the burden of handling the actual stamp to someone else.

Agreed larry that it is mucj easier than the retailers having stamps and a handwritten tracking book.

I have been collecting my stamps through the yrs and like the old fashioned im hand at purchase method. Ill go get mine from post office.
