Let's be clear about this: Russia is invading Ukraine right now

There are two things happening between Ukraine and Russia right now. First, Russian and Ukrainian leaders are meeting in Belarus to negotiate a peace deal in the Ukrainian conflict that Russia insists it has nothing to do with. Second, Russian military forces are crossing the border into Ukraine in what is clearly a hostile invasion and act of war. That includes Russian artillery, Russian tanks, Russian-trained irregular forces, and even uniformed Russian soldiers who have admitted on camera that they are Russian military ordered to invade by their commanders.
But the first piece of that is obfuscating the second. Getting Russia to agree to a peace deal on Ukraine requires lots of careful diplomacy, and that means that no one wants to formally acknowledge Russia's invasion of Ukraine, even though Russia is definitely invading Ukraine right now.

Nah man, they just got lost.

Most of the "separatists" aren't Ukrainian, so I'd say the invasion's been going on for a while.

Are you saying that Putin would tell a lie?

I don't think these guys are lost....

A statement published by the military on Wednesday said a convoy of "up to 100" tanks, armoured vehicles and rocket launchers was seen travelling on a road toward Telmanove, a town about 80km south of rebel stronghold Donetsk and 20 km from the Russian border.

I think you're gonna win your bet.

What was the bet? Was someone actually fricking stupid enough to think that this wasn't an inevitability?

Obama will swing his mighty golf club and make the bad Russian JV go away with his mighty cool self.

Does Russia stop with EASTERN Ukraine, or do they press forward for more. Will they make a move for that separatist region in Moldova? What are your thought Russian?
Posted on 8/27/14 at 10:48 am to GeauxxxTigers23
quote:Yes. They won't have the support of the majority ethnic Ukrainians in the central and west part of Ukraine. Besides, eastern Ukraine is where the manufacturing industry and natural resources are and that is what Putin wants.
Does Russia stop with EASTERN Ukraine

This is about nothing but resources. Putin isn't an idiot and will push the limits until someone pushes back.

Obviously the powers that be are being lenient on Russia, but I'd be shocked if they let this go on much longer. At this point, Russia's follies are falling into slapstick comedy territory.

Obama should issue a stern warning then draw a redline all around Ukraine.

The KGB identified the overachievers as early as 4 years old, took them from their parents and sent them to special schools their entire life.
It would be a mistake to think of Putin as a bumbling bureaucrat. He is playing the west like a fiddle to this point.

I think the last sentence is key:
quote:
That's not to argue that Western countries should have responded with more sanctions (even that took substantial cajoling from the US), but the point is that Putin shrewdly prevented it from happening by playing on the vulnerabilities of Western democracies: short attention spans, rapid war fatigue, and the often-unwise pull of popular opinion.

You don't think this is reminiscent of pre-WWII? Germany invading Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary?
Eerie and scary. Wake up world!
