What about Wind Waker? It starts out with a couple fantastic temples and then turns into a gigantic fetch quest.

Half life had a great ending. Xen was great and Nihilanth was a creative final boss.

I just remember coaching and leveling up my people to all become Jedi and tailoring each of their skills to maximize what they could do as a unit only to have to rely entirely on my one character at the end. That was really disappointing.

glad you liked it, but i loathed it. i literally killed nihilanth by unloading the gluon gun on him. took about 12 seconds
surprised to see the xen love. i've never seen anyone post a good thing about it anywhere

I've always thought about this and forgot to mention it so I'm reviving this thread. And it's not an end to a specific game so much as a series. I'm referring to COD: Modern Warfare and its 2 sequels.
We had WWIII, the United States was invaded, all of Europe was hit by biochemical attacks and then invaded by the Russian army. And let's be clear. Makarov was just putting pieces together to set things up, he wasn't a Russian dictator or even the leader of the Ultranationalists, who took over the Russian government. And it was the Russian government and the Russian army that initiated the Third World War and invaded not only the U.S. but Europe as well and killed god knows how many people.
There was a line at the end of Modern Warfare 2 after you retake the White House about burning Moscow to the ground or something. THAT would have been a fitting ending. Kill Makarov and Shepard, of course, but I would have liked to burn the entire fricking Russian nation to ashes. frickers. Still pisses me off.
