betting a lot of CD buyers are car listeners without audio input jacks/USB input.

I don't get this either. I love music and the first thing I did is rip the head unit out of my 4runner and Sequoia and replace with a pioneer with HD radio tuner, Bluetooth, hands free phone and multiple USB ports. I can't even imagine hassling with a physical CD.

Considering you can get everything I just mentioned above in a $100 unit off amazon I don't see why anyone would settle for less.

It's worth swapping out just for the hands free phone and gps instructions through your speakers alone.

Eta if you search my user name and pioneer you should find my very detailed install write up including pictures of how well these pioneer units work with android phones. I was particularly proud of how I installed a USB port in my glovebox to hide the fact I have a 32gb stick plugged in all the time. The other USB wire is inside my console and can be used to charge the phone. These days I hardly use the stick anymore thanks to Google music.

I have a really good reason not to do all that. My work drive is 5 minutes.

I'm sure there are plenty of ways to transcend the need for CDs in even the oldest of clunkers, but I think the reality is that a lot of people still just use a CD player. It will mostly die with the baby boomers. As easy as it probably is to install, remember that there are an alarming number of people who don't even know how to work the factory radio that came with their car. Car technology in that regard is lagging behind, too. I bought an Accord only four years ago that came with a 6-CD changer as part of the "upgrade" package.

I work from home, so my driving time is zero on most days. If I drove often enough, I'd probably look into enhancing my music source options in my car (though I have an input jack which I use to stream toddler radio on Pandora when the kids are the in the car). And while I don't buy CDs anymore, I still listen to CDs I burned 12 years ago with a 2x External CD burner that was like $200 back then.

Ultimately, I don't really listen to that much music though (which is odd being a former musician). I put on Pandora or Spotify (the desktop program is the shite) when I have to do an editing marathon. I have, however, gone on a FLAC binge when I bought my awesome headphones and amp/DAC stack for the PC.
