Switched to AT&T family plan, and they have me financing a phone without asking

got on a family plan yesterday, went from paying $110 at verizon for 1 line to 150 at At&t for 2 lines and a tablet... i start to look at my receipt last night and realize that they have me paying for my phone on an installment plan, which was NEVER mentioned to me once, I wanted to just buy the phone outright like when starting a new contract, which is an option, I traded in my old phone and was told the cost of my new phone would be $75, I had a 4S so it seemed reasonable... come to find out, now I will be paying more than $150 a month because they have me on an installment plan to pay the FULL $699 for the phone over a 2 year period. never mentioned it once, rest of my family has been with At&t since it was Cingular.
I have a 14 day grace period i know that, so im not super mad or anything, but just a heads up for anyone doing any changes at AT&T, watch out for them trying to sneak this installment plan stuff in with you.
learn from my mistake

The real question is what did they do with your trade in phone money?

Sounds like the salesperson screwed up. Phones are free with a 2 year contract unless you upgrade during that 2 year contract then you are put on an installment plan.
I think they also put those with less than perfect credit on the installment plan instead of giving them the free phone.

It comes out the same as if you would have bought it outright. Do the numbers.
Trust me, I sat there for a long time the other day going over all the difference in plans. It's a solid setup. The money is no different.
I have 4 lines family and wife went from Android to Iphone. Bill went up $20/month for 2 years after a $50 fee. They didn't sneak it, you weren't listening and you thought you were getting a free phone.
How does getting a $699 product for $75 seem "reasonable"
Also: saw a T mobile commercial last night for 4 phone plan for $100 and they pay out your contract fee with other carrier. I'm thinking hard!

Congrats on getting away from crappy carrier. Now if we can just get you to stop using an iPhone wed be getting somewhere.

You signed the contract before you read it?

You're going to pay for the phone whether you do a 2 yr commitment or not. It's being subsidized into your monthly bill in little installments.
You didn't ask enough questions or simply wasn't paying attention.

That's the way every carrier is doing it nowadays. You can go to Verizon or Sprint and they're going to offer you the same type of program.

Looks like the days of subsidized cellphones have finally come to a fitting end. What took them so long

Just FYI with Verizon's share everything plan they give you $25 off per month for each line not under contract

Do as I did with AT&T. I bought a pre-paid "Go Phone" (Nokia 520) for $48 at Wal Mart and took it in and had it activated under my Mobile Share plan. It may not be as fancy as the iphone, but for the difference in money and monthly charges, it gets the job done. No contract commitment.

I spent $500 on a SIM card capable unlocked phone.
I am with Straight Talk, who uses AT&T towers.
The only time I have connection problems is when there are 100K other people around (LSU football games). LSU needs more cell towers or whatever it would take to make everyone's phones work).
I pay $52/month for unlimited talk, text and web.
It's also cheaper if you pay 3 months at a time.
