re: Employers to New Grads: We Don't Care About Your Grades, Classes, or College

Don't let this BS fool anyone. Grades and the school are very important - particularly when trying to get an interview. It is generally all employers have to separate folks unless there is particular industry experience or a personal relationship.

My first job out of college back in 2008 they didn't give a frick what my GPA was. This was doing Gov't contract work and got me a clearance.

In my field, for the better jobs it is:
Major - Won't get looked at if you didn't major in the field.
College - Has to be a known, respected college
GPA - Need a good one for the better jobs with the companies that pay more.
Internship in the field - not all that important, but sorta a bonus.
Rest doesn't matter at all.

The college propoganda of reputation and gpa.

it is probably very field specific
if you are in a very competitive field, your GPA is going to be important because they will use it to filter applications
if it is a not so competitive field, internships are probably more important
but I know that if you are trying to get an engineering job in big O&G, they will most certainly care about your GPA

Then why am I trying to get good grades? Self satisfaction? Ugh.

For new grads as a whole, this news story may be true. However, for engineering, I think school & gpa are the most important.
All I know is that if you had above a 3.0 and were trying to get into oil with a cheme degree, if you went to GT you were 100% getting an on campus interview if not more.
If you had a 3.5 or better you were basically a lock and my friends who met this criteria all started out at 90K+ in big oil.

Yeah I went interview at a radio station recently, and the first thing the interviewer told me was that what made my resume stand out, was that I didn't mention my GPA or grades. He said what he liked about my resume above the others was that I listed my real world experience.
No offense but that's a radio station, they aren't hiring 4.0 students from Rice

I figured this out a while back. Despite having a terrible GPA of a 2.6, I worked throughout college, did 3 internships, and graduated a year late. I'd say I've only been asked my GPA in about half of my interviews. It may have screwed me out of one or two jobs, but I'm on the path I want to be at this very moment. Can't really complain.

Uhhh, employers don't care about college? Yet every graph illustrates importance of attributes WHILE IN COLLEGE.

Yeah, these companies say that... and then when you have shitty grades nobody looks at ya.

What discipline did you graduate in? The company I work for might have an opening for a junior EE come available over the next month or so. Just waiting for the approval process to finish.

if you graduated with a sweet 2.2, that GPA is going to be glaringly important to an interviewer

How about with that sweet 2.5 while maintaining a career in the Marine Reserves, Working 2 jobs the entire time, and having some nice letters of recommendation..

I know a guy who was once asked in an on-campus interview if he really meant to put his GPA on his resume.
He said "I thought that was something you are supposed to do."
"...only if it's good."
He said the interview didn't last much longer.

Ever heard the old saying "money talks and bullshite walks?" This is a perfect example of bullshite. If this poll reflected reality, a graduate with sterling volunteer credentials and extracurriculars but a 2.4 from UNO would have better employment prospects than a cum laude Harvard grad with neither. Does anyone believe that?

Like many others have said, this article is shite. Internships are extremely competitive for the major companies, so in order to get them they usually require a very high GPA
