Medical community is shying away from using eponyms.

I had one of my old high school buddies die of that not too long ago. Whatever you call it, it's a death sentence, maybe a little less worse than Alzheimers.

We've become more medically knowledgeable. I think people are more comfortable using the actual terms (although this is an acronym). Plus people are living longer in general so the disease has more time to rear its ugly head without being hidden by other ailments or causes of death. This has increased the diagnosis rate and its become a lot more people's disease.....not just Lou Gherig's.

Because hardly anyone knows who Lou Gehrig is anymore.

And LGD isn't as good an Acronym as ALS

I think most people understand that the odds of Lou Gehrig dying from Lou Gehrig's disease are so low that it was probably just a government plot.

Lou Gehrig's Disease isn't universally known outside the US.

Stephen Hawking is probably a better example of ALS today, but media is just going with the correct name "ALS".

Besides what was already said, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis gives you some explanation of the disease.

Lou Gehrig's disease does not.
