It's hard to predict what the exact catch totals will look like. So i'll just guess the order i think they'll finish in.

1. Amendola- security blanket, ala Welker
2. Gronk- fav target
3. Dobson- outside guy, deep threat/prototype
4. Vereen- dump offs, screens, kevin faulk type role
5. Lafell- can see him catching a lot of short passes like Hernandez
6. Edelman- of course his role changes if Amendola gets hurt. I think he's limited otherwise.
7. Thompskins- could flip flop him wiht Lafell, not sure how that will work out yet.

Amendola had only 2 games with more than 5 catches with Brady, fwiw.
Not sure about security blanket just yet.

He looks like more of a receiver than Edelman by appearance. But who was Welker before he got to NE? A skinny short white dude from Miami. Brady loves quick dudes off the line who gets open running crossing routes. That's Edelman. Or at least it was last year.

I believe I read something that Amendola was only in on 4WR sets so far in practices.

Ya never know with Pats doe.

Amendola had a groin for most of last year. Then a concussion. He was never fully healthy

Danny Amendola only played in three- and four-wide sets during Friday night's preseason game against the Eagles.
Julian Edelman and Kenbrell Thompkins were the exclusive wideouts in the Patriots' two-wide base. Therefore, Amendola only ended up playing on 12 of Tom Brady's 23 snaps Friday night, catching one pass for nine yards on two targets

When is he ever healthy? Ever?

Now if the Pats have soured on Amendola, that changes things drastically for Edelman.

that's why i put a disclaimer. If he's hurt then Edelman gets a boost.

From yesterday:

quote:

Belichick: Brandon LaFell can have 'big' role for Pats

When the New England Patriots averaged a league-high 36 points during a five-game November stretch last season, it was with Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman in starring roles.

Beyond that reliable tandem, the pecking order of Tom Brady's receiving options are up in the air entering the 2014 season.

Coach Bill Belichick said Tuesday that former Carolina Panthers wide receiver Brandon LaFell has a chance to "carve out a role for himself" in New England.

"It might be a big one," Belichick added, via ESPN Boston. "I don't know, we'll see."

Fantasy footballers shouldn't go crazy with expectations. That "big" role will likely involve special teams and sporadic appearances as the "move" tight end next to Gronkowski in "12" personnel packages.

Edelman and Kenbrell Thompkins played in all two-wide receiver sets with Brady last week. Danny Amendola and LaFell came on purely for three- and four-wide packages. The picture gets even more muddled with talented second-year wideout Aaron Dobson returning from a foot injury.

If Edelman is locked into the No. 1 receiver role, it appears that Thompkins' strong training camp has earned him the other starting job.

"I've got so much confidence in him," Brady said of Thompkins after the second preseason game, "and what he's been able to do and continue to achieve for us."

As we pointed out on Monday's edition of the Around The League Podcast, it's Thompkins -- not Dobson or LaFell -- who should be the late-round flier of choice in fantasy football drafts.

Yea i had read that too. It's going to be a cluster frick. May come down to not being able to start anyone but Gronk and maybe Vereen

I like LaFell as a sleeper too. What's sad is the he is the most proven out of Thompkins and Dobson.

I'm just leary about anyone coming off week 14 ACL who is not named Adrian Peterson.

Lemme guess... Edelman? The only WR to play 16 games last season for New England. He caught passes by default.

he caught passes because he gets open and hes just better than the other guys.

quote:

Edelman caught 21 passes the year before when the Patriots actually had options

He was Welkers backup, when Welker was injured, he produced. He was coming into his own that season until he got his head knocked off on that reverse.

I guarantee he leads the Patriots in catches if healthy.

But the last thing I read was that Gronk was 50/50 to play at in game 1. I had Thompkins last year, and it was obvious that Brady did not trust him. Of course, WRs make a big jump from year one to year two. Seems like the only sure bet on this team Gostkowski.

Fair enough

I've come around a bit more on Edelman after reading about how they were using Amendola.

yea their WRs overall led the league in drops, Thompkins and Dobson were a big part of that.

They were asked to do a lot as rookies though. So we'll see.

I'll Reiterate one last point. The Welker/ Edelman role has been the bread and butter, an extension of the running game, for the last 7 years or so. Brady keys into that.

Agreed because Brady didn't really have anyone to throw to last season.

Gronk was out and the WRs sucked.

Not saying Vereen won't be involved, but there's more options in NE this year and the rookie WRs are a year older

I dont think anyone denies that. The question is whether it will be Edelman or Amendola.

but as long as both are healthy they'll both cut into the value of that role.
