Reason article

quote:

Fully 66 percent of Republicans want only the kids who win to receive trophies, while 31 percent say all kids on the team should receive them. In contrast, Democrats are evenly divided with 48 percent who say all kids, and another 48 percent who say only the winners should receive a trophy.

quote:

Among those who only think winners should get a trophy, 64 percent have a favorable view of capitalism, 64 percent thinks markets better solve problems than government, and 63 percent favor smaller government providing fewer services. In contrast, among those who think all kids should get a trophy, a plurality (49%) have an unfavorable view of capitalism, 50 percent thinks a strong government better solves problems than the free market, and 54 percent favor larger government providing more services.

quote:

Support for participation trophies declines with income, education and age. For instance, a majority (55%) of those making less than $30,000 a year want all kids to get trophies and 42 percent want only the winning players to receive them. In contrast, among those making $90,000 a year or more, 72 percent want only the winner to receive trophies, while 26 percent favor participation trophies.

quote:

Gender and race/ethnic differences also emerge when it comes to trophy allocation. Women are slightly more likely then men (44 to 35 percent) to say all kids should get a trophy. However, more significant differences emerge among race/ethnic groups. Fully 63 percent of Caucasians say only the winning players should get trophies, while 34 percent say all kids. Conversely, 56 percent of African-Americans and Hispanics say all kids should get a trophy, while 42 percent say only the winners.

So poor people and minorities are the reason for this growing attitude that everyone should be rewarded regardless of merit or hard work? Color me shocked

not really

i'd imagine you could run the data and get similar results for things like:

-obese children/parents
-smoker parents
-hours spent reading/studying by children in school

No surprise here. The only people that fear competition (in sports or the market) are those that expect to be losers.

Nice find SFP.

They needed a study to determine that?

Thinking back to my younger days, I remember getting trophies for simply participating in tournaments. I also remember those trophies going directly into the garbage can and being awfully determined to get one of those big trophies that the champions got. I ended up getting some of those championship trophies and remember the feeling of satisfaction that came with it.

I guess the point of my story is, kids aren't stupid. They know who wins and loses, and no matter how much you disguise winners from losers kids will always seek to be on the winning side, as they should.

It's worse. It's egalitarianism. This won't end well.

Sure won't. A nation that refuses to compete is destined to be an economic failure. We've -so far- been able to insulate ourselves because of our relative size and wealth. But we can't live on that forever...

White men are independent, competitive, do-it-yourselfers.

That's why they are generally Republican and why they wouldn't support participation trophies.

Completely.

Funny story - my next door neighbor was a pro NFL QB and I was playing basketball with his 5-6 year old son who had just played in the championship game in baseball. I asked him who won and he said "we don't keep score so we all are winners"

I HATE participation trophies unless they accomplished something to be part of that team.

For instance, my daughter is a competitive gymnast. Each year they get a plaque for being part of that team.

HOWEVER, she also has a ton of medals from meets. She has to earn those. They do not give them to everyone. Although SOME meets will give a medal for everyone in the all around but that rarely happens.

I thought trophies for everyone would be more of a white liberal thing...did not expect the blax to lean that way.

ETA: And how do they define "kids". 4-6 year old kids barely know wtf is going on in-game, rarely the score and have no idea what their record is at season end. Parents know but kids don't so a trophy is meaningless to them.

So, the definition of the word "trophy" is meaningless now.

I'm surprised that no one isn't shocked that only half of democrats are for participation trophies.

So wait, how did they get to a championship game if no one kept score? What was it the championship of?
