Widely recognized that white guilt played a role in the last 2 Presidential elections.

Umm according to who? Obama did terrible with white folks in the south. 15-25% in most Deep South states. In fact, Missouri has been a bell weather state until these past two elections.

I would guess that most white people that voted for him did it to feel superior to those that didn't. It eliminates any feelings of guilt they have for showing prejudice at any time in their past. Do you notice, those that voted for him tend to talk down or about those that didn't? They feel superior, therefore, they must support him at every turn. It had nothing to do with racial tension.

Maybe they believed in the platforms he ran on.

I'm certain that in 2008, people would have voted for just about anyone who wasn't a republican.

This is true, and I don't see the Republicans offering anything to vote for now either. It seems our election cycle has become more about not voting for the other guy, rather than voting for a guy with ideas.

Because voting for him was the cool and trendy thing to do. Anybody who's cool and trendy must have all the answers, right?

While many voted for Obama, 40 something percent didn't, leaving more than enough people to be racist

Obama hasn't done shite but try to divide us

The never ending victim syndrome

The large number of minorities who can't or don't make comfortable lives for themselves

The media

All those things keep race relations in a bad place.

Yup, and that is a regrettable state of affairs
