Recently re-watchd The Thing.
Holds up so much better than those other 80's offerings even though I do love Aliens.
But The Thing...what a great no-decade defined movie.
If you were asking best 80's movie "defining the decade" of those 4 - it's easily Predator.

The Thing is one of the best horror/suspense movies ever made. Predator is pretty underrated (and it's pretty praised already). And Aliens, while good, is vastly overrated IMO.
But I do love all four.

Seriously, though - I'm not a fan of horror, generally - Alien and The Thing are more in the horror genre, than sci fi - IMHO.
Whereas, the rest are action films with a sci fi theme.

Well said. Except I have to put the Terminator first followed by The Thing. Aliens is definitely overrated.

I don't disagree that there is a subgenre, but Aliens, Terminator, and Predator don't fit it - these are all, in their own way, straight action films with science fiction elements. Alien and The Thing are horror films or Sci Fi horror films, if you like.

Initially I would have rated them differently, having grown up watching them all in the Theater. BTW, there is a comic book series Aliens versus Predator versus The Terminator that was released back in the day. Based on my maturing and the significance of the works, I would have to say Aliens has had the most impact and The Thing the least. Terminator follows Aliens with Predator in 3rd.
