Why did LSU play UK from the early 90s until 2002?
It was.
I believe at the time there were 2 permanent opponents and 1 rotating. LSU permanent opponents were Florida and Kentucky, after the 2002 season the SEC decided to have 2 rotating opponents and 1 permanent opponent.

That makes sense. So basically from, what 92 to 2002 it was similar to how it was now in that we very rarely saw the likes of USC, UGA, UT, Vandy.
That's the biggest issue IMO with schedule is that preservation of Florida comes at the expense of USC, UGA, and UT most notably.
