Taking a car to Firestone rather than the dealership.....

Much of a difference? My check engine light came on today and want to have it checked out. Unfortunately, I'm busy as shite this week and it would take at least an hour to bring it to the dealership and firestone is right by my office. (Lunch isn't an option as I have lunch meetings every day this week).

Anyone is competent enough to read a check engine light. I'd take it to Firestone and see what the vehicle's computer is saying - and if it's something major take it to the dealership. If it's something simple, Firestone is capable, IMO.

Go to autozone, they'll tell you what's wrong. Done in 5 minutes

The ONLY Firestone I would go to is the one at Roosevelt/Veterans.
Others are garbage.

Like others have said, go to Auto zone. They will hook it up and give you the code for free. From there, go home, search the code on the Internet and see if it's something you can fix or bring it somewhere.

firestone, goodyear, etc. are the kings of upselling products and services...go there and it is likely that you will end up spending money on something completely unrelated...
as the others say, I would just swing by autozone and let them tell you that the gas cap is bad...buy a new gas cap while there and be on your way...

All I know about Firestone is that I took my truck to one when the engine light was on.. They diagnosed the problem and gave me a quote.
It wasn't an immediate problem so I took it somewhere else to get fixed. Got it done for about a 10th of their estimate.

Firestone charged me $156 for something that has cost me $78 at the dealership.
I don't go to Firestone anymore.

At a minimum you'll need new ball joints and wheel balancing.

Firestone and all the other tire stores are just that, tire stores. When you need to see a doctor, do you go see an accountant?
Take your vehicle to a real mechanic shop. The dealership has all the latest up to date diagnostic equipment.
BTW, what is the year model and make of your vehicle?
Could be a small issue like a leaky vacuum hose

I've never had any problems with the Firestone on Tiger Bend Road.

Firestone sells tires
I wouldn't let them do anything else

Firestone is bad, but stealership is the worst. You need to find a local mechanic that you can trust.

Take it to the dealership. At our store we will read the codes for free as do many dealerships nowdays.
Many of you might be surprised how many calls a day dealerships get from the jack leg repair centers asking us to help defining a code or asking us to provide a diagnostic chart to them b/C they have no idea where to start. And no, we will not give the jack leg auto center any information....well...the CORRECT information anyway. So usually the jack leg repair center will guess which in turn costs you more money because of their lack of knowledge.

Do NOT go to Firestone on Camp. I live within walking distance and took my car in because of the convenience. Not so convenient when you end up taking it somewhere else after they don't fix it correctly.

First, go to an auto store that will read the codes for you - don't worry, its a free service that all do. That will give you a starting point. Forget both Firestone and the stealership. Find the best, most reputable small service place you can...that is, if you are incapable of turning a wrench.

Firestone sucks.
They upsell everything. Wife went there for inspection. Brakes were too slow to stop. They were changed 3 months prior. They did send my wife home with a $380 estimate.
I went to brake place and saw same guy he just laughed. Gave us another copy of parts and service performed. Then went back. Took 30 more minutes to get my sticker.
This is the firestone on highway 99 near kingsland for those in Katy. frick that place.
