Depends. Does yours have both front/rear disc brakes or rear drums?

If it is the latter, then drums typically last 2-3x longer than discs do. A simple pad replacement would be the easiest and cheapest - if the rotors are in good shape. If they are, then just get some sandpaper and scruff them up a bit and you will be good to go - you can also have them turned for like $15 or so at any O'Reiley's or wherever. In that case, blank rotors aren't that expensive and it may just be better than turning them. This has to be one of the easiest jobs there is. No need to flush the system afterwards, either.

Now if you need new rotors, then the price goes up. I did my Tacoma's for less than $150 myself (OEM pads and rotors). However, do NOT get the ultra hard pads that are supposed to last forever - yes they will last a long time, but the price you pay will be excessive wear of the rotors...

Mine was $374 for new pads and to turn the rotors. I don't know if that's a good price or not but I didn't have to do it.

I had a GMC dealer tell me I needed a tranny filter and flush for $75. Passed on him and went to my regular guy and he said waste of time unless it looks and smells dirty. Dealerships are where to go to get ripped off, when will that ever change?

Not really.
The company that builds the vehicles are the ones that train the mechanics to maintain and repair them.

If you are driving a diesel, fuel filter and it water separator for sure. Had three friends end up with blown motors because of water in the fuel. They will not warenty this either. Fords and a Dodge. 8k to fix the motor not a replacement a fix.

Hmmm. Not so fast. Who do you think does the oil changes? Had a friend who went to a reputable Toyota stealership for oil change and rotation. The kid - yes kid, because the lowest get that job - didn't put oil in it...

Have you kept up with what's scheduled in the manual?

If so, continue doing that.

If you wait until it looks dirty you a fricking yourself. ATF has additives that are used up over time so the ATF will need to be changed long before some peon tells you it looks dirty. There is no way you can judge how much active additive is left in as fluid just by looking at it. Same goes for motor oil. $75 for the fluid and filter is pretty good considering you'll have to buy more than a case of ATF at $60+ to do it yourself.

I'd be furious if that happened to me.

That happened to a friend of mine at a rural Ford dealer near Baton Rouge. His oil light came on on his way back from the dealer, so he turned around. It was about 4 quarts short when he got back (I think the motor only took 6) The plug on his explorer was not tightened and it leaked oil fairly rapidly.

I also know of a case where a transmission repair on a Dodge Sprinter was not done properly at a dealer, and a few hundred miles down the road, the transmission imploded. Chrysler dealt with everything. The original dealership had to cover the second repair, towing fees, and truck rentals in another town. Chrysler went to bat for the owner and made it happen.

That's the advantage of a network of dealer service departments. You can sometimes get support from the manufacturer if a mistake is made. It's nice especially for small fleets or work vehicles that are rarely in the same city for more than a few consecutive days.

I don't see how they can do it for cheaper than materials alone... Sure it wasn't a simple drain/refill and labeled as something else?
