Reason I ask is because I have a growing fondness for older shotguns. I have purchased two Auto-5's and a 60's era 1100 in the last 6 months all three of which came with fixed full choke barrels. I know there are older guns out there with mod and imp cyl barrels but they seem to be very rare. Then there's the guns that were fixed full but the barrel was cut down and an ugly poly-choke was installed. What is the reasoning behind all the full chokes? A friend of mine suggested that most of the time a man would have one shotgun that had to do everything from ducks to deer. Just wondering what some of your thoughts are on this.

There is a reason why double barrels were so popular for so long. Instant choke selection....

that an no reliable pump or auto designs...

I still use a full choke late season.

I think the older folks had more birds and more days to hunt.

My 1100 has a mod barrel. Hell, every old 1100 just like it that I have seen has a mod barrel. No idea they were so rare

Because most folk did not have the funds for multiple guns. You had to hunt deer, squirrels, wabbits, ducks, doves, and robins with the same gun. My uncle still shoots a full choke Sweet 16 at everything. I saw him kill 23 doves in the same hunt with a box of shells once (true story). He said as a kid he tried to kill 25 squirrels with one box, but ended up one short when a fox squirrel got caught in some vines while falling and he had to shoot him out. I killed a deer with that gun when we were rabbit hunting once. Shot her in the ear hole at about 5 steps. Was glorious.

This is true. I used my 870 Wingmaster with fixed modified choke from 1977 until I got concerned about steel shot damaging the barrel. You learned how to pick your shots to end up with more kills and less cripples.

At the duck camp I grew up in, everyone who hunted with a choke other than full had a boyfriend.

You see so many long barreled full choke guns because people only had one gun. It needed to be used for everything between deer and doves.

Full choked long barrels were best for buckshot, so that's what most bought for their one gun.

Hell yes and if you didn't know this all you had to do was ask them...

I'm 50 now and inherited a lot of those old Remington Mod 11's, the Belgium Brownings and a side by side Fox which was cut down from a full choke in the 1930's so as not to tear up the burds... pity killed the value but, it will keep on passing down and shouldn't ever be sold anyway.

Deer didn't come back into play in the South until the late 70's so they pretty much missed that but Duck/quail/dove we just don't know what they did...

way easier to knock them down with lead.

MiL has a Remington Semi-Auto shotgun built on the Browning A5 patent, from around 1915. Came in a leg-o-mutton case, with full choke barrel for ducks and geese, and cylinder barrel for quail. Really neat old gun.

Lots of excuses on here as to why, but no question, yes they were significantly better shots.
