i had one. they are particularly fun when stuck in airport lounges during layovers when different sporting events are running on the tvs

step 1: casually walk past tv to get model & brand
step 2: return to chair. covertly pull creased code list from wallet of remote codes to get correct one
step 3: program code into watch and the fun begins

I was that kid. Except I was in middle school. Around that era was also the time when laser pointers were becoming popular and the bane of teachers' existence. Also, plain digital watches with alarms... they were the original annoy-a-tron. Kids would set their alarm and hide the watch in a trash can or the teacher's desk and wait for the fun.

Teachers have it easy just having to deal with kids texting in class.
