I got my wife an iMac for christmas last year. I knew exactly what I was getting her. She already had a macbook pro and wanted something for the office that would still integrate well with our iPhones and appleTV. It's not a power machine. But it's pretty and an interface she's used to...
Plus, and more importantly, "wife" is the keyword here.

That's another point. Windows dominates, overwhelmingly, pretty much every industry that uses computer. I would much rather my children learn the ins and outs of the dominant (and coincidentally more complicated) platform, including proper maintenance and security. Also, my kids are too young to know it yet, but the day they need a real computer is the day they learn to build one.
