So, my coin is 26 cents? That really sucks. I was hoping it was worth at least a dollar to give me luck on the putting green.

One of my favorite hobbies. I collected old Confederate Money in college. I had some great pieces like "Iberville Parish $.50 bill.", which is where I grew up. I miss them. They were all in perfect condition.

Not the most valuable but most enjoyable.

I want to know what happened to them as well. A hanging thread like this could spawn a short story or a novel.

I've started collecting gold and silver coins. Nothing unique gold buffaloes (my favorite), gold and silver eagles, gold and silver maple leafs, krugerrands, and one gold aussie kangaroo.

Is it worth it to buy different foreign coins sometimes priced at a premium? I've never sold coins before, should I just get whatever is closest to spot price or are American Eagles and Buffaloes easier to sell?

I sold them for party money in college. Kind of a shame. I couldn't tell you how many boxes I went through at trade shows to locate them.

I'm not much of a coin collector, but I order a few boxes of half dollars from the bank every month. I have built a nice little horde of silver doing this. I usually find 2-3 40% silver halves in each box.

I also have a 1900 New Orleans mint silver dollar. The story goes that a general store owner in Houma would give a silver dollar to all his customers when they had a baby. My Gramma saved the 9 silver dollars he gave her, and gave them to my dad, aunts and uncles at Christmas one year.

I've considered getting coins from the bank. How many half dollars are in a box, and what are the 40% silver ones approximately worth?

I had figured they would already be picked over if I got any

When I was 9, I bought a quarter for $42,000 in New York. Even made it into the New York Times. I hear it's about to sell again for a hell of a lot more than that.

My dad gives me updates from time to time on how much his former collection is worth. I wish he'd stop.

What kind of quarter sells for that much? Was it used to close Abraham Lincoln's eyes?

A gold one from 1821.

Are you sure it wasn't a 'quarter eagle'? That's a 2 1/2 dollar gold coin so named because $10 gold coins were called 'eagles' and $20 gold coins were called 'double eagles.'

I googled and can't find where the U.S. ever minted gold 'quarters" as in gold twenty-five cent coins. If there were gold quarters, you just "learned me good."

I didn't say it was a quarter dollar. I just said "quarter"

New York is fun, though. Worthwhile trip.

Okay, I get it. You're embarrassed that you got caught lying about a coin you once owned. Was the $42,000 part also a lie? Seems silly to me that you think it's that important to lie about it.....

ETA: Why did you edit out your snide remark in your last post?

I didn't say I owned it either.

I just "bought" it, so to speak. It was sold a few years later. I even know where it is. Wink wink.

You mean to tell me nine year olds don't have $42,000 in cash lying around, and that a gold quarter isn't worth 2 pounds of gold? Consider me hoodwinked

You have to order a box of halves. There are 1000 halves in the box. 40% Silver halves are worth about $3 bucks right now.

The 40% halves are the only shot you will have of finding silver. I go through about three boxes a a month, and have for 6 years. I get a few 40% halves almost every time. I have seen one 90% half, and it was in the very first box I ever went through.

the 40% halves are getting less common. I used to get 5-6 a box, now I average 2-3.
