It sounds like the teacher thought it was an interesting idea without giving it too much thought.

You should work with her on this and answer any questions or concerns/worries she has while finding out the details. But I'd make sure to include at least some of the really bad stuff, and see if the teacher has a problem with it. Let the teacher be the one to question the project.

If it really bothers you, do more advanced research and guide her to information that is not so gruesome. I doubt there is much your child hasn't at least generally heard of before (murder, hangings, etc.).

Exactly.

To the OP, if the assignment is counter to your parental beliefs, meet with the teacher and come up with an alternate way to satisfy the objective ("The Holocaust" is probably not the primary objective. The content is more than likely just the means through which the teacher is teaching a set of skills.).

Honestly, though, it sounds like your kid at least has a teacher who's making an attempt to run a meaningful class.

not only that, but if he messes this up and it's a big part of the final grade, he might not have any other solution but to go to summer camp to make it up, with all of that schooling the kid will probably be gassed before he knows what's coming to him

i'd tell teacher to assign a different report. your kid will eventually learn about it - doesn't mean he/she has to learn the details at 10 years old

I don't even like reading holocaust stories. I think it's inappropriate for a ten year old

Schindler's List is

A ten year old shouldn't watch this film, so why is reading about the acts any more acceptable?

Kids need to know that there is evil in this world.

Our modern pussy schools try to paint everybody as wonderful and worthy of compassion and understanding.

Except republicans, they are pieces of shite

I am not too keen on this. I know history must be studied or it could be repeated, but this seems a little strong for a bunch of 10 year olds.

First time I saw pictures from the death camps I was in 4th grade. He will be fine. I think it's best to make kids learn about it early so it stays with them.

Why should 10 year olds be shielded from the violence and the horror of humanity?

They certainly aren't in places full of violence and inhumanity.

What of the 100,000+ that perished at Verdun in the space of weeks?

It was actually approaching half a million dead over a matter of months. The battle lasted throughout almost all of 1916.... One battle... like 9 months... half a million dead, over a million wounded or MIA.

... And Verdun wasn't even the most bloody battle fought that year on the Western Front. While the battle of Verdun was still raging, a little over 100 miles north of there, the British & Germans had a go at each other in what we know as the Battle of the Somme.

(To give you an idea of the scale of slaughter, on the first day of the Somme the British suffered 58,000 casualties. That's the same number of men we had killed in all of the over decade long Vietnam war.)

10 is old enough to be aware of history. Kids need to be alerted to reality and not insulated. I did a report on Stalin when I was 11, it didn't cause me any psychological trauma.

I know.

60,000 casualties in an hour at the Somme.
WW1 is one of the most fascinating conflicts in my study.
But that's a different thread.
And I'd actually love to have a WW1 discussion with you over the course of drinks.

Gallipoli?

My favorite period of history to study. I consider WWI the most transformative human event since the fall of Rome. Perhaps one day we can discuss all of WWI and Churchill's Folly over cold ones.

AS for the subject at hand, I do believe that all kids should learn about the Holocaust once they reach a certain age. But I agree with most here that 10 years old is too young to delve too deeply into this subject.
