Let's put the subject matter debate aside for a second. Of all the things she could have chosen to lead with on the very first day of school, she chooses this. It sounds like she is trying more to impress someone and is trying too hard. Way to get kids excited about school for the year, here is your school supply list and your tortured dead kid assignment.

Germans.

Social Studies hasn't even started the transition to common core. For a 5th grader, this assignment is ridiculous. I really don't understand the purpose of starting the school year out with an assignment that makes a child contemplate dying at the age of 10.

How long has this statement been used for? Decades?
yes, and primarily in socially and economically advanced countries like Russia and Iran.

Yea I guess I didnt even factor into the equation that its the first day of school
The subject matter doesnt bother me, but the timing is weak

A ten year old shouldn't watch this film, so why is reading about the acts any more acceptable?
So kids shouldn't learn about the holocaust until they're 17? That's fricking dumb.

we should probably burn all books and execute all educators... no wait, that's been done before

Sure, kids should learn about the Holocaust before 17, but this scenario is different. A 10 year old shouldn't be forced into a situation in which he/she blindly researches the outcome of a similarly-aged child. It's a forced burden that no child (in the peak of their innocence) should have to experience.

When we have college students, in this case from Maryland, who do not know who the Founding Fathers were, who fought who in the Civil War & who the atomic bomb was dropped on ( Waters World on Fox last wk)who Lincoln freed, etc it's never too early to start teaching our kids history of any kind in my opinion.
