Gas heater. No leaks. No corrossion. Gas is on. Circuit breaker not tripped. Water runs through. All clear water.
What might be the culprit and can I fix it without calling a plumber or is best just to call the plumber?

Kudos for not calling it a "hot water heater"
I know nothing about gas heaters to help but good luck

This just happened to me 2 days ago. Check for a burnt thermal coupler. Simple to replace. Go online.

It is a hot water heater.
While the water in the tank is hot, it has to be heated continuously to keep it hot.

The water doesn't enter the heater hot. And water heater still explains what the appliance does, without being redundant.

I knew I could get this thread headed this direction with minimal effort
Its not redundant. It's heating hot water

It's also heating cold water, and storing water that is being heated.

Well, you can definitely heat hot water.
But his water heater isn't even heating now.
Should we just call it a "water" at this point?

Call OP's a "water tank with broke shite in it"
If it's in the attic, it'll still get pretty warm for a shower at the end of the day. Just make sure you're first and don't use much water.

On a gas water heater, I've found a failed thrmocouple to be the problem around 80% of the time.
Start by searching YouTube for a thermocouple replacement video on a heater that looks reasonably similar to yours.
Another common problem with gas water heaters is a clogged, sooty, or defective flame arrestor plate. A symptom of this problem is a gas pilot that stays lit for an hour or maybe a day, and then goes out. We recently had to replace a pair of defective (poorly designed) AO Smith water heaters because of this issue. Cleaning the intake and flame arrestor plate doesn't cost anything, but access was a huge pain because ours were on the bottom of the heater.

I've been known to call it both. I also use icebox and I'm sure I've said warsher and dryer.

Cylindrical water storage unit would suffice, I would think.
After it gets fixed, call it an H2O Molecular Activity Accelerator.
