FWIW, the writer himself said things have expanded for season two and had hinted at 4 major players (it's noted at the link).
Not saying Vanity Fair isn't taking a shot in the dark but given the success of Season 1 and a few major HBO shows ending this season, I can definitely see where HBO would pony up.

...and it would also appeal to big time actors who are looking to up their stock. Between TD and Dallas Buyers Club, McConoughey had the biggest bump of his career.
