Annapurna I is worse, slightly under 3 for 1.

But a much lower death percentage on descent and I believe Annapurna's numbers are skewed by a couple of massive disasters 7-8 decades ago.

My dad worked with a famous climber that was the first to climb Denali solo during the winter. I think the guy's name is Vern Tejas.

Wow anyone who would want to ascend that in the winter is a moron

I think the death rate on Annapurna has been dropping for a while.

For those interested in winter ascents, Minus 148 about the first winter ascent of Denali is a great read.

K2 has never been climbed in the winter. Nanga Parbat has not either.

Misread your post. You were agreeing with my disagreement with another poster.

By "climb" are you grouping "hike" in with that term like a lot of flatlanders do?

Hopefully not, but if so, you're going to miss out on a lot of great experiences and views. More than half of CO's 54 14ers aren't climbs. They are hikes, no hands needed to ascend or descend.

ETA: Although, I do use trekking poles on the descent to save my knees and hips some. I already have one titanium hip.

I climbed K2 one night at 40 and thought I would never come down. I looked down on my dead body as EMT's tried to revive me and my friends cooking brisket. Everything was out of body for hours. I could not move a finger or toe.

There are high altitude mountains that aren't so dangerous. Aconcagua is just a strenuous hike, if the weather is cooperative.

Yep, that guy is a badass. He made that climb with an aluminum ladder strapped to his back in case he fell into a crevasse.

Sorry to burst your bubble but K2 has never been conquered in the winter.

Yup - realized that later. Corrected. It was Denali.

Not sure why anyone wants to climb up something like that. Just crazy.

This. And there are mountain routes only somewhat technical that are really amazing, like Mt. Rainier. Kili is over 19,000 and something like ten thousand people a year walk up it. I did it myself, it's just a straight albeit strenuous hike.

True, but "strenuous" is understating the case just a tad.

And you can ski down most, if not all of it, depending on your line.
