And as a bigger picture issue, what the frick is so special about the cab industry that necessitates such tight regulation and protectionism?
It's the system that the cab companies have fought for and built up over a long period of time specifically to discourage competition. They employ the common tactic of claiming that it's about safety, but really, their aim has always been to create a barrier to entry for potential competitors.

Cabs have a lot of competition. Street car, buses, limos, other cabs, car pools, pedi cabs, bikes, your feet.
Then why are they so worried about uber?

b/c UberX will come in and operate illegally.
Posted on 7/30/14 at 11:17 am to TigerWise
It is only illegal because the cabs have set the system up to make it illegal.
ETA: And if they're so worried about UberX then why is Nola trying to make it cost $50 to get to the airport via Uber Black?

And the drivers don't have proper licenses?
Posted on 7/30/14 at 11:22 am to TigerWise
Good. One shouldn't be required to have a government permit to voluntarily transport someone from one place to another for a mutually agreed upon price.

It's like if someone wanted to come in and open a restaurant, and the preexisting restaurants showed up at the City Council bitching and moaning about competition.
oh you mean just like food trucks?

have you read the articles asking for a bailout of the (medallion-based) cab industry in NYC?

I'm all for Uber because I'm tired of waiting upwards of 45 min - 1 hour for a cab for 2 people

i somewhat misphrased. people are suing for the property rights stuff and economoists are postulating a bailout
this article, obviously, is against a bailout

this is pretty much exhibit A while New Orleans will never become a major player among big cities
Even places like Philly aren't trying to kill innovation and competitiion. Yes, the place full of unionized carpenters making $50/hr allows uber

You NOLA haters do realize this isn't the only city to have been down this road with uber ?

You think food trucks have not been met with political opposition? They have.
Anything new, disruptive, and threatening is dealt with in his manner, using the law and your connections to thwart their advancement.
This. Just look at how permitting has been used to slow down Barcadia in BR. At this rate, there's no chance they'll be open in time for the start of football season.

I wish this situation would get resolved similar to the food trucks bit I doubt it will.
A lot of the restaurant owners seemed to be pretty level headed and realized the food trucks weren't a huge threat.
I don't see any such reasonable thinking from the cabbies.

do realize this isn't the only city to have been down this road with uber ?
and it resulted in DC cabs being upgraded and improved due to the competition.
A win for everyone
