If you can't find the North Star, or find north from the time of year and position of the sun, and know how to use north once you find it, you shouldn't be in the woods alone.

We dont spend all our weekends of hunting season chasing walker hounds on property we dont own.
Not as much practice using that whole north south thing when traversing in new territory

When i was a kid, i could tell the time by the sun within ten minutes.
I could also go outside with sunglasses and not feel blinded. Times a changing

I wait for the day all cell phone gps maps die. Half my friends couldnt find their dick without it. Its ashame how people have no sense of direction. I grew up looking at maps for fun. Guess i was different.

Id like to thank PawPaw for teaching me how to get unlost by intentinally leaving me in woods at age 8. He was watching the whole time

I don't know how to find the North Star.
Have heard its the brightest one in the sky, but they all look pretty much the same to me.

I don't think it's the brightest one. It's easy to find as long as it isn't cloudy.

If it's cloudy or you're in stuff too thick to see the sky it won't do you much good

You won't see me in the woods without a compass. It's an absolute necessity where I hunt.

Now that we have google earth, there's no reason to not be familiar with where you're going before hand. I always have a map in my head and know roughly where I am on it. At least know what major landmarks you're between.

Dam people. I though there were outdoor people here. Just look at any tree that has moss growing on the trunk. That is NORTH.

Hey, wanted to respond even though your post it old. Yes, the story is absolutely true. I've hunted Joyce since 1976 when mallard limits were the order of the day, and wood ducks were everywhere. Had what we called "the walk-in" hole about 2 miles south of the nature boardwalk, was good for about 15 minutes of shooting like clockwork from dawn to 10-15 minutes, walk out with 2 woodies per man or more if you were illegal. North Pass to Middle Bayou, then as far north as you could go in the motorboat, then push pole for 30 minutes North Northwest, hunt duck from a tree blind, shooting them at 20 yards and 3 feet off the water, or let em land and shoot on the jump. Best mallard hunting other than what I experienced off of Reserve Canal. Those days are long gone, my friend.

Back to the lost hunter. Yes, this was in the mid 1980's, he went in on Kliebert's Ditch, they found his pirogue and some clothes hanging on a tree. My guess is hypothermia or cottonmouth, too cold for gators. Or, drowning. Let me tell you there are some bottomless holes in that swamp - I have many times had to pull myself out by clinging to the branches of a nearby bush or tree. You WILL NOT walk this swamp once you're north of Owl Bayou. That area has a fair amount of bull tongue and other plants with large root mass that you can walk on - you'l learn pretty quickly which vegetation is safe to walk on and which is not.

If you go, tell someone where you're going and when you'll be out. Bring GPS and batteries, don't think you're a wussy if you use flagging tape, but take it down on your way out or you'll blaze a trail for everyone else! Good Luck!

I havent been back since getting pulled out the mud by my buddy. Not to mention he borrowed my .30-30 and dropped it 20ft from his climber barrel down in the mud up to the scope

No deer, no ducks, no crawfish, no frogs, no squirrels, and very VERY dangerous place. I would stay away if I was you.
