I am not discrediting Emmitt. He was a great back. I just would not put in the top tier of Payton, Brown, Sanders, and now Peterson.

None of them ever played a game with a separated shoulder.

Cumberland - GT : 222-0

GT didn't attempt a single pass.

They had 1,600 yards rushing

Cumberland turned it over 15 times.

222-0 may actually be the craziest single game of all time. I think Cumberland was actually playing literal scrubs (like non-football players and shite). That one has always fascinated me.

Agreed. The Emmitt discussion is just always a hot topic even when mentioned tangentially.

I think hockey's better now than back then (that was a little too wide open) as long as the refs actually enforce the post-lockout rules. I know Baloo loves his late 90s Devils. There's a balance that needs to be achieved between the 80s stuff and late 90s/early 2000s stuff, and I think the NHL is close to a good spot. Anyway, that's for a different thread. / hijack

ETA: Haha, right on cue.

Both of therse are possible.

Pistol Pete Maravich avg 44 points per game for three straight years in college.

I posted this is a previous MSB thread about unbreakable records

quote:

Just as unbreakable as Cy Young's win total, if not more, is his complete game record of 749 games

Considering starting pitchers now start an average of about 33 games a year, if a pitcher completed every game they started for 22 years, they would still be 23 games short of tying the record

To put it in perspective, if you add the complete game total that led MLB over the last 22 years, (the major's leader from 1989 to 2010), you get 225 complete games.

No one will get within 600 games of the record ever again. The current active leader has 59

Everyone is saying Pete's PPG average is untouchable, but his career points record is even more out of reach.

I think it'd be the opposite. Teams play way more games now than back then.

If you averaged 10 assists/game for 10 seasons, you'd only be halfway.

You'd need to average 10 assists for 19.28 seasons to barely break it, WITHOUT missing a single game. You'd break it by 3 assists...

Nobody that good is going to stay in college nearly long enough to score over 3600 points.

There have been a couple of other players that averaged over 40 PPG for a single year so I would think that would be easier for someone to break.

ETA: Someone would have to average above 50 PPG over 70 games(this would be about two seasons) to break Pete's career record.

Nobody will ever match 44 PPG in college again. Esp without using the 3 pt line. Not for three straight seasons as well. Just think about that. amazing. Plus he was almost a one-man show cause LSU was pretty bad back then.
