I think it's really funny you think you can speak for how an entire group of people thinks.

but with medicine or whatnot, the degree in the sciences is required.

That's not true at all.

To get into med school, you don't necessarily need a biology degree.

You get that at medical school genius, not in undergrad.

People major in humanities because it interests them. Why should there be any deeper answer than that?

I've already stated that I don't care what you major in, I just don't want to hear those people complain when they don't find good jobs.

I would have loved to double major in English and History, but that wasn't going to pay the bills; so instead I majored in a science field and also went on to graduate school.

med school is a lot easier if you major in the sciences. i'm not saying that we need to get rid of the humanities. few things are more important for the developing mind. what i am saying is we might need to get rid of the humanities at universities because they aren't rigorous, they don't prepare anyone for anything, and they are a waste of money and time. learn your humanities on your own. don't go to school for that.

and you're arguing pre-reqs, which i could do with foreign languages as well, AND each discipline relies on a different set of pre-reqs

Foreign language pre-recs are a special case. If the material is presented in a way that everyone can understand (e.g. the same language is used) then the theories behind the teachings will be generally better understood by a transplanted science major as opposed to a transplanted humanities major.

"See, the sad thing about a guy like you is, in 50 years you're gonna start doin' some thinkin' on your own and you're going to come up with the fact that there are two certainties in life: one, don't do that, and two, you dropped 150 grand on a frickin' education you could have got for a dollar fifty in late charges at the public library! " you see, i got degree in sciences because i needed it to get into grad school, which guaranteed a well paying job. humanities degrees don't guarantee anything. only people who make decent money with that are those who have connections and prob could have gotten the job without the degree in the first place. not sure why people think going to college "broadens their minds" or "teaches them to think." i started doing that on my own reading books on my own. being forced to read stuff by orofessors doesn't broaden anything. it's just taskmaster work to keep them employed and you paying tuition. they tell you to read a book and then write about it. why can't you do that on your own? do you not have access to the internet? to a library?

Everybody is different. I never learned to think critically until I actually gave a shite enough to want to think. This happened fr me while an upper classmen undergraduate.

Have you considered that not everyone has the aptitude or the inclination to go into the few select fields that you feel are worthwhile? Thank god the world is not made up solely of engineering types and that money is not the sole determiner of a happy, successful life.

Why does Baskin Robin's make 31 different flavors? Because people like different things.

The original OP begs the question "Is University for the sole purpose of preparing yourself to make a living".

It's not.

ETA: I was sort of responding to the OP with that post, not you. Sorry for the confusion.

I have a Finance degree and an MBA. Looking back, it wasn't anything I couldn't have picked up in a couple of years of OJT and some reading on my own. I wish I had majored in History.
