The disease is spread by rodents. There are lots of various rodents like ferrets, etc running around the deserts in the SW. Probably some hikers or campers getting bit by fleas that hop off the rodents infected with the disease. The northern part of Arizona in particular is filled with a particular type of desert mice that I'd imagine can carry the disease.
Also, the plague is somewhat treatable these days with certain drugs.

Ya gotta take someone else out with ya, huh? I'd imagine it'd be sort of hard for a plague epidemic to start in the US. We've got so many resources and scientists that are preventing anything from spreading too crazily. Just got to be careful for super bacteria and viruses now.

Yea, normal bubonic plague ain't shite compared to what it once was.
