Right. And I think the problem is that people keep thinking an Adam Sandler movie is going to be good, then pay to watch it. Know this before you go in

I can like Adam Sandler because I'm not going to be duped.

But I did watch Grown Ups on Netflix.

quote:

Grown Ups (hated by most), $271 million
Just Go With It, $215 million
Hotel Transylvania, $358 million
Grown Ups 2, $247 million
Bedtime Stories, $213 million
You Don't Mess With Zohan, $200 million
Chuck and Larry, $186 million
Click, 4238 million

Click is, by far, the best movie on that list.

Bingo.

I have zero respect for someone who continues to make garbage. If people like him, that's fine. Personally, I'd rather get the flu than watch an Adam Sandler movie. They make me just as sick.

FWIW, I usually tend to like Sandler's films, and a lot of the ones that get hated on are unjustified IMO. Also, he makes movies that aren't aimed at me and you anymore really...they're aimed more at children.

At this point, if you go into a Sandler movie and aren't sure what to expect, then it's your own fault.

I thought Grown Ups was fine. It's not great cinema or anything and the jokes are cheesy and easy, but it's an easy movie to sit down and enjoy enough as a "family comedy."

Damn that scene in the rain outside the hospital. Some reason something always gets in my eyes at that point in the movie.

Not lately. Will Smith has been on a downward trend. He hasn't had a true big blockbuster in over a decade. Maybe 9 years if you include Hitch, but that wasn't really as much of a big blockbuster as it was just a 'hit'.

Say what?

Will Smiff's last decade:

2004 - I, Robot, ~$350 million
2004 - Shark Tale, ~$370 million
2005 - Hitch, ~$370 million
2006 - Pursuit of Happyness, over $300 million
2007 - I Am Legend, $585 million
2008 - Hancock, $624 million
2008 - Seven Pounds, $168 million
2012 - Men in Black 3, $624 million
2013 - After Earth, $244 million

Most of those did good business domestically and abroad...but either way you slice it, he's arguably the most bankable star in Hollywood. You're out of your mind thinking he hasn't had a blockbuster in over a decade...he's had nothing but blockbusters basically.

ETA: He's just not making as many movies lately.

Agreed.

Pain & Gain was kind of an odd movie but I enjoyed it and thought he was great. I've gotten to where I'm actually intrigued by his work now. Not so much F&F, Hercules, Doom, etc., but he's pretty good in comedic roles like Pain & Gain and Be Cool.

HBO just ordered a series called Ballers that's supposed to be a comedy based on pro-athletes, that he'll star in and could be awesome for IMHO.

Also...

Threads like these are basically just about how ridiculous amounts of money put one beyond criticism.

I don't think anyone says Sandler can't be criticized, generally his movies are subpar. Sandler isn't an artist, he doesn't claim to be anything he isn't. If some people pay enough to make his movies successful, and he's having fun doing it, I don't know why you would criticize him.

SOME People like his films? Some people engage in a financial exchange to watch his films. Right?

For someone like Christian Bale,an artist for sure, made a movie that was widely panned, maybe his performance was terrible and he knew it. He's probably going to be upset. He's probably going to go back in and try to make a better film. He deserves a ton of respect to keep pushing his acting forward. That's completely different.

understatement.

I will never go see a Sandler movie in a theater, because his movies are terrible, and he admits that he puts little effort these days in them.

But I would bankroll him if I owned a production company.
