I know it's the name you gave your egg race game over there, and it's just what you know, but it makes about as much sense as calling a car a bike and a bike a car.

It's the name of the sport because it developed from one of the other codes of football, specifically Rugby football. I don't see the same amount of derision for Australian Rules Football or for Gaelic Football, which also use the hands. In the end looking down on a sport because of its name is pretty silly.

You're name is also silly because both terms, football and soccer, are words developed by the English, as soccer developed as an abbreviation of Association Football in Oxford, I believe in the 1880's. The term was used synonymously or in conjunction with the term football in the United States until the 1970's, when the United States Soccer Football Federation dropped the football from the title to become the United States Soccer Federation.

I have a strong feeling this is a troll account.

There is no derision for Gaelic football or Aussie Rules because they don't try to steal the title of just 'football'.

They respect their elders, like we're all taught as sprogs.

Them folk at Oxford were all anti football anyway. Egg chasers and canoers the lot of them.

Oh get off it. No one claims the word "football."

You're clearly a moron.

Please frick off from this board. You clearly don't know anything about the history of the words "football" or "soccer," nor do you know anything about the development of either sports in the United States.

There are two different sports known as simply 'football' around the world, and ones an imposter.

Or do you also call the imposter American football?

If so, I wasn't aware of that fact. Though I suspect it's not the case.

No. There are many sports around the world known as football, each of them with their specific code, each evolving from one of two English schoolboy games. The word soccer is used in countries which developed different codes to differentiate Association Football with the various other codes that developed regionally (American Gridiron Football, Canadian Gridiron Football, Gaelic Football, Australian Football, etc, among many other variations). Are you indignant that the Australian team is named the Socceroos?

If you're whole shtick is going to be based on this extremely tired and silly argument, then I'd advise you to just shut the frick up. This is the best board on this site, don't be a count and you'll be fine. But since you seem to insist on being an a-hole, I would just advise you to just shut up.

I think in Australia, they call Aussie Rules football simply football. Why else would they use the term soccer?

We just have more affinity with our local clubs, and you see fans of other clubs about to gloat at etc. I'm sure the majority of you care more about your local NFL clubs than you do about the American NFL national team?

That's an absurd comparison to a fictional team.

If I'm a troll for answering your question, what does that make you? A cave troll?

Jesus, you couldn't make it up.

I think the comment about the national NFL team kind of blew your troll cover. You know enough about football that you'd come to a college football message board, but not enough to know that there is no such thing as a national team in football in the US?

RDW - I think you have a point. Football culture is similar in almost all countries world wide. Everyone puts their own slant on it, which is a good thing - wouldn't it be boring if we all sung and did the same things - but from what I gather (and I hold my hand up I hardly watch any American sport so I could be completely wrong here) American style sport support is the kind of thing that football culture turns it's nose up at. Stuff like cheerleaders, goal music, face paint, foam hands and such. There are one or two clubs in England who use these methods (namely Crystal palace) and they get ridiculed for it.

I read a bit from an English journo during the World Cup who said (trying to quote from memory) "and along comes team usa in it's usual pompous bombastic fashion, strutting about with a giant eagle on it's chest". When we over here saw that "I believe we will win" it was pretty much what we all thought, it was a head in hands moment thinking "what the feck are these lot doing" not knowing whether to laugh or cry.

I think he's right that you need to be more English but less English, as ridiculous as that sounds. You need to have your own style of support, it's no good just copying us, but it should be less foam hands, face paint, army recruitment style chants, because in doing those things you'll never really fit in.

Not sure that makes a great deal of sense. Don't really know how to explain it.

Yeah... we couldnt give 2 fricks. Also, are we supposed to accept that English, or even European soccer culture is the "true and proper" culture. Latin America watches the game and cheers very different than Brits.

You said it, not me. The United States fields a football team that competes internationally. Albeit, not in a competition that's highly regarded, but still.

You clearly are deficient of any reasoning ability. You are a troll because of your whole shtick, not because of your answer to my question.
