I, too, was always under the impression that LA had basically two groups of people:

1) blacks
2) people of french heritage

Y'all really flaunt the French, though:

-"geaux"

- City names that all sound french

- last names that all sound french

- a distinctive accent with a french tingle.

People in NOLA don't speak French of have a cajun accent.

Movies are the worst offenders when it comes to this.

Just like any other area, Louisiana was pretty homogeneous prior to 1800, hence the confusion. New Orleans was actually the 2nd to 3rd largest entry point for immigrants for a very long time.

Only in a very small portion of the state.

BR has no distinguishable accent.

NOLA has a New England accent

Not all of us have that. It's different in all areas of the state. NOLA has its own accent, as does the Acadiana area, and here in SWLA things get more redneck/Texas sounding, etc.

It all varies. Don't beleieve what you see on TV and Movies.

Every time I travel out of state for work and talk to people they always ask me "hey, where's your southern accent"? Baton Rouge is notably absent from the southern drawl belt.

Even in Lafayette, people with a noticeable accent are usually from a smaller town. My family has been there for 3 or 4 generations and my grandparents are the only ones with an accent, and they are from Crowley originally.

That not everyone is a Cajun. Whenever I tell people I'm from Lafayette and that I'm mostly of German descent, they seem confused. They have a look that says, "how is that possible?"

Same here. My mom's side of the family is from Rayne, Branch and Church Point. She's a Dischler.

I thought everyone knew that. Every grade school textbook I was ever issued had a part that read "county/parish".

And the river is named after the Mayaimi, a native American tribe.

Miami U is named after the Miami (a different tribe).

Just a total fail

My mother's maiden name is Schwartzenberg, her parents were both from Crowley and their parents immigrated from Austria/Bavaria.
