Once in a life time fish, fishing the Gulf. Would give my right nut to be on the other end of that fish.

Why do they have state records when these fish are caught hundreds of miles off the coast? The only one I'm familiar with is the Gulf record which was caught by Barry Carr.

most of these fish have been caught off of the Louisiana coast. its all about where they are weighed in

also, that must be a pretty shitty tournament if they only won 40k for that fish
yeah, just looked at it, only a 5k entry fee...
so they probably burnt 10k in fuel, nice little profit

More than likely they won a lot more than that in the Calcutta. Depending on what they bet of course.

Not sure if that tournament had a Calcutta. The big Calcutta tourney in Texas is poco bueno.

yeah that might be true, but i dont think the texas or florida fish were caught off the la coast. might be wrong. texas fish was caught of port aransas down by corpus - not really close to la waters.

We had our chance two weeks ago. Hooked a fish while trolling Ursa that spooled a Penn International 80W

Must have foul hooked a dolphin

Got caught in the current next to the drill ship Noble John Taylor and couldn't back down on the fish like we needed to. Everyone was sick watching 1200 yds of line scream out then the knot break. Took all of about 2 minutes to happen

I had two bluefins spool two 80s at the exact same time. Nothing could be done about it.
I've also foul hooked a dolphin (mammal) that spooled a 50 in about 30 seconds.

The power of those fish never ceases to amaze me. On the way out we had a huge school of the mammal type pass under the boat. Really cool to see over a hundred of them streaking under and around the boat. Had at least 15 of them following the bow wave at one point.
Back to the OP i did hear on the radio that weekend that a monster blue marlin had been caught in TX.

I wasn't on this particular boat, but I was talking to a captain that charters a private boat. He told me a while back he was taking the owner and is wife out to green canyon, just the three of them. They had three 80W and two 130W dragging baits behind the boat. Well he said all of a sudden all 5 rods go off. They trolled over a school of giant bluefin. 3 of the reels get spooled. The fourth comes off and the fifth was foul hooked and eventually died. Said it took them forever to reel him in. Weighed 700+ lbs. A lot harder to catch fish that big in the gulf because your battling 2,000-4,000 feet of water as compared to the northeast where they are in 150'of water.

Man that must have been a crazy experience. I don't think there is much you could do in a multiple hook up situation with fish that big.

Kind of what happened to us. We were trolling and decided to pick up and roll out. We took the boat out of gear and the baits dropped and the BF tuna hit the dropping baits and took off, spooling us.
