Never driven there but the drive up to Payson is fine. I mean.....roads with inclines/declines but nothing too crazy.

if you go up 17 to flagstaff then get on 40 you'll climb several thousand feet.

don't know about the way through show low, but it's still a climb up the beeline to payson.

like nurse said, nothing insane though.

Painted desert is cool... Get to see Winslow Arizona. If you are in a flat bed truck that might come in handy.

Yeah, PHX to Show Low is all uphill and "mountainous". I think beyond that it should flatten out though. All I know is I-10 from AZ to TX is absolutely mind-numbing. Frick that solo drive.

drove from okc to phoenix a few years ago, and went through tonto national forest. it's not very "mountainous", but the view is nice.
