I did it with an outboard and only go stuck when I pushpoled myself onto a flat. Still got off without the alarm going off. Find areas where it looks there is a lot of grass, but there is a "channel" through the grass (where boats travel a lot or where current runs through pretty hard). Usually the water is pretty clear and black. You can see the reds. I did a lot of sighcasting and only used artificial. Every trip I made, I was catching 25" reds. You may not fill up the boat, but it's fun fishing. You can go anywhere in a gator tail if there's water covering it. You'll be fine there. Across 56 has some good fishing as well, plus you can get out into the bay a little bit if it's calm.

Launch at the dump behind Ashland Jail and fish for reds on the grass beds.
