Will Sonny Dykes be successful at Cal?

Last season they won 1 game. I know injuries were a major factor, but Dykes plan on having to score 70 to win every game makes me wonder if he will see the success he saw at Tech.Tech had a good team, but finished 3rd in the wac his last year because they couldn't stop San Jose or Utah State defensively.

Not super familiar with Dykes. Not familiar at all with Cal's roster.
That being said, Cal will win more than 1 game this year. So this year will be more successful than last year

Stanford
Oregon
Oregon State
Washington
Washington State
Cal
3 schools that are doing really well for the time being, and Washington just hired Chris Peterson. Washington State has the pirate. The fact that he's not a bad coach, but is the worst coach in that division speaks volumes.

They were declining under Tedford and then fell off a cliff with Dykes. They looked horrific last year. It will really surprise me if he turns it around there. They got blown out in like 75% of their games.

Cal was atrocious last season.
They were very young, especially offensively. Their leading passer (Goff) and rusher (Muhammad) were both freshmen and four of their top five pass catchers were either freshmen or sophomores. They return four along the offensive front. They are a year older, so hopefully they can put some points on the board. They'll have to. The Cal defense will be among the worst in the country... again.
I think Cal needs to focus on staying competitive in games before we start speaking about success within the program.
I like seeing Cal competitive, so hopefully Dykes can turn the ship at some point in the near future.

It reminds me a little of our situation with Bielema.
Arkansas and Cal were the only BCS conference teams to lose their starting QB, RB and WR from 2012, and it showed.
Both need time to get more talent on the roster. I remember a lot of people said we should have hired Dykes but it just shows the style of offense doesn't really matter if you don't have the talent. Being in California there will be plenty of opportunity to build his offense though you would think.

Dykes was a strange hire for Cal.

Time is of the essence for Bielema. Even with the talent that he lures, it probably won't be enough. Arkansas will have a world of trouble competing with Alabama, LSU, Auburn, and A&M each season. Even in Arkansas' best years under Petrino, they were getting blown out by Alabama and LSU.
I would like to see Cal competitive, but the defense has shown zero signs of life and it looks like those woes will continue in 2014. They are going to get torched on the ground and through the air... again.

Thats just not true.
Petrino was 2-2 against LSU with one of the losses in OT

that's the thing - Dykes' teams never played any defense at La Tech. (if he had any defense at all, that 2012 Tech team would have gone undefeated). You can't out-Oregon, Oregon. Stanford plays defense.
Some of these Offense-only coaches do okay - like Sumlin. Many fail.
I thought the Bielema hire was interesting as heck. It would have been more interesting though, had he gone to a SEC team closer to the SEC pecking order as Wisky is in the Big Ten. I'll still check Arky out a lot this year.

False. Tech had a pretty good defense in 2011. The defense carried them to the WAC championship. 2012 was all about offense and positioning for a better job. Dykes does value defense, I just think that offense makes it hard on a defense. Could be wrong though... some fast-paced offenses play good defense.

Fine. In Arkansas' best years under Petrino, they were losing to the top two teams in the west. In 2010, it was Auburn and Alabama. In 2011, it was Alabama and LSU. I don't see how this changes under Bielema and the addition of Malzahn and Sumlin to the fold.
This is a program that has never won an SEC Championship and has represented the SEC West in the SECG just twice since the turn of the century. One of those times was because Alabama was barred from postseason activity.

I agree with that - Tech's D was better than the statistics suggest. But still, just some average D, and you're undefeated.
A lot of coaches trying to "move up" do a lot of short term recruiting (if any at all). They also tend to put their best players on offense, because offense sells to the ADs hiring.

I think I could deal with a 10-2 season and going to a BCS bowl

You really think that is realistic now that Arkansas has to compete with not only Alabama and LSU, but also Auburn and A&M on an annual basis? He's the fourth, probably fifth best coach in that division with a hell of an upward climb (in-game, on the recruiting trail).
Hell, one could argue MSU is in a better state than Arkansas.
Bielema has always had difficulty keeping assistants around, whether it was salary or leaving for better position. Looking to be a bit of the same in Arkansas as Chris Ash and Taver Johnson have both left. Couple that with him supporting a rule-change to slow offenses down and using Agu's death as a platform to further a personal agenda, I'd say Arkansas is a long ways away.
Can't see Arkansas moving anywhere fast.
