I think you're right about that. Plus he would likely end up with a judgment on his report if he didn't pay it and they sued him.

The problem is that you are a product of today's America. You are owed something for living here. You shouldn't have to make sacrifices. You deserve an iPhone with 4G service, a 50" TV with a nice package of channels, a nice car or at least a moderate car that's souped up so you can impress your friends and the ladies. You also deserve to eat as you'd like, have drinks with your friends, enjoy as much time chilling, and generally live life. You've earned it because it's the way it's supposed to be. No way you should take responsibility for your actions and do the right thing. No way you should pay off this debt. It would be much smarter to go to court and incur more expenses. And you should definitely not learn from this, because one way or another you will always be bailed out by the system.

Keep in mind that you are likely to get a 1099 for whatever amount is "forgiven" and you will end up paying income tax on that amount.

Ok, here's whats going on.
Im trying to reach out for suggestions and help about this situation. I'm 100% positive that im not the only one that has been in debt like this.
But having convo's with posters and then get bombarded with trolling post like "you f'd up" "pay them you POS", "you are the problem with america", blows your lid.
I'm keeping a positive attitude about this, but just asking general questions to handle this.

How about you have a garage sale to pay your debt? I would sell anything I could to avoid my wages getting garnished.

I'd borrow from whomever I could to get the settlement arranged if I had absolutely no other way to handle it. How much are they settling for? Do you not have anything you could sell to cover that cost? Can you work some odd jobs to pay it off? When is it due? I don't know your situation but I could think of several things real fast I'd sell to get that money. Then when I got everything under control I'd methodically replace them if they needed replacing.

So, how much difference was there in your offer and their counter?
And from the way your post about "I don't have the money to pay their counter" comes across... Did you even have the money or plan on paying the offer you made?

He asked for help. Got good advice and followed it. Got the result that we told him he would get, and is trying to game the system for more.
He's a POS and he should have his wages garnished for the full amount. And he is what is wrong with America.

That's why I want to know what he offered and what they countered with. If it is less than a few hundred and he is saying there's no way that he can pay that, then he had no fricking intention of paying the amount he offered to.
If you can't come up with a few hundred dollars then you don't have your fricking priorities straight.

He could have made the original $2000 in a month if he wanted to. When my wife and I were dating, she told me that she had $6000 in credit card debt. When we got engaged, I worked overtime and weekends and paid the debt off in a couple months. This was making money in the 35k range right out of college.

To OP: have a garage sale, sell your truck and buy something more economical, get a weekend gig delivering pizzas. You need to sacrifice here or you will never pay this off.

I had a similar situation about a dozen years ago when I was hurt in a car accident, however it never reached the point of being sued. I can say with a straight face I may have paid someone late, but I've never stiffed anyone, ever.
I worked with everyone I owed and paid every bill I had once the responsible parties paid me. That "big settlement" didn't go real far, but I did the right thing. Funny thing is 10 years later all those same banks are happy to have my business. Had I not paid, that probably wouldn't be the case.
If they made a reasonable offer, then get the details in writing and pay up. Take it as a lesson learned, bad news needs to be dealt with promptly or it will get worse.

Sorry Darryl, that's exactly what's wrong with America. You may hate when people say it because it's the truth. Go to the poorest parts of the world where they maim their own kids so they can beg Westerners for change and you will realize what opportunities exist in this country. The only ones that can't thrive here are the ones that hold a grudge for what has or hasn't been given to them or that refuse to do for themselves. I'm here responding to you when I could be sleeping or taking classes or researching something that will further me as a person. Instead I'm making a choice to waste time responding to this...but only I am to blame.

Your obviously living beyond your means if you couldn't pay the debt, so in the truest meaning of the word you are splurging on things you obviously can not afford.
