Outlook for lawyers growing more grim

Lawyers have been struggling for a while now, but it's gotten even worse: Half of lawyers are now making less than $62,000 a year, according to the National Association for Law Placement.

Back in 2008, associates at big firms made $125,000 straight out of school. But by last year, that had dropped to $95,000. And the vast majority of lawyers actually work at small firms for much less money. Local prosecutors, for instance, make about $50,000 in their first year, while those with 15 years of experience only earn $80,000.

This is terribly inaccurate.

There is no other career out there that has such a saturated job market than lawyers.
It's amazing people still see it as a potential job.
Scruffy's dad is a lawyer and he told him to never go to law school for this specific reason.

Should have went to trade school to be a welder

This is why we're seeing so many frivolous lawsuits taken on a contingency basis. They've got nothing to lose.

i think this has more to do with the over saturation of law students more so than less jobs. the law field is still huge, there are just too many kids in it now.

Yep
And I can only hope for the day that they file suits against each other

Abolishing all lawyers must be done by 2015.

Law schools were playing the same free money, get a load and learn game that all American colleges were/are playing
I know NUMEROUS jobs that require no legal background that 50% of the applicants are law school graduates. And not just from Southern.
There are a lot of poor attorneys out there
Louisiana # 10 in lawyers per capita
so I think the math on that is
LA population = 4,600,000
/ 10,000 = 460
460 * 40.06 = 18,248 attorneys in the state

There are still jobs for those at the top of their class, there was just an influx in law school students for a few years meaning more and more students at the bottom without jobs. The law school applications are starting to drop pretty significantly.

So many people piling into law school because they can't figure out what do in their field and they want to make more money
It's a shite job. I'm surprised more people don't realize it.

My dad wasn't that adamant, but he certainly didn't encourage us to go into it.

This doesn't make any sense. First year associates at big firms in major cities make between 115k and 160k, in large part.
But yeah, it's not like it used to be.

Well, yeah. It doesn't work if you're not any good.

This.
Corporations, banks and businesses need in-house counsel and legal personnel now more than ever. There is plenty of opportunity as far as the general field is concerned, it's just that a whole generation of people have gone or are going to law school simply because they think it's a lucrative field to enter, and law school enrollment numbers are inflated thusly. Same thing applies to the medical field, it's just that med school is harder to get into and does a better job of weeding out people in the application process.
I have about 10 fraternity brothers who went to law school and graduated, and I wouldn't trust about 8 of them to watch my dog for a day.
