They owe you rental car for the time your vehicle was unable to be driven, until they either repair the vehicle or settle up with you on the total loss. Once you get your check for total loss, they don't owe anything past that. You should be able to purchase a vehicle immediately.

I plan to buy one immediately after I get my money. They want me to turn the rental in a week before I get my check from them.
