That's just one of many routes the two teams could take. But NOP hasn't found taker for Rivers yet in trade talks, sources say.

The problem with this is we don't know what Demps is asking for. If he's shopping Rivers for a 1st then he may not get any takers. Going from a 1st to the stretch is pretty extreme. I will say that this suggests it's very unlikely we're getting even a protected 1st for Rivers.

If it's a dump, his asking price can't be much here. The goal is clear. Make room for Asik and if we are considering using the stretch provision, that basically means he has no value especially at his current salary. If we find a taker, we should grab a second round pick and thank the heavens.

What really has pissed me off about this is that it appears Demps agreed to give up a poorly protected 1st rounder for Asik (when it was clear Houston was desperate to dump him and we should have had the leverage) when all the while, Demps did not even have a plan as to how to clear the space to even make the trade.

I really doubt this is true. Not even the worse GM in NBA history would be that stupid.

To be fair, he might have had a plan: this one.

Why not?

That does kind of seem to be what is happening right now

Or if he did have a plan, it must have been a really shitty one

Haha, true. Stretching Rivers could be a plan, but I doubt it's the plan.

Would be a terrible plan. I think it would cost us our MLE if structured that way with taking Asik into cap room.

Giving him away for nothing is better than stretching him. He's easily worth a 1 year trial at $2.4 million to one of the teams in rebuilding mode.

Exactly. That is a rare whiff from Lowe/his sources. Unlike with Gordon, the Pels can actually just give Rivers away if they must.

Again, Lowe said it was an option. He didn't say it was the option we take.

Stretching and waiving Anthony Davis is an option. I mean, there is a less than zero percent chance it happens. But it is an option at the Pels' disposal.

Rivers can be dumped for a 2025 conditional second rounder if needed.

Not sure what the frick you mean. I'm just saying there is no reason to stretch (leaving lingering dead salary on the cap) and waive (lose an minor asset for nothing) Rivers when other realistic options are available.

Other options are available. But you have to consider the fact that someone has to want to take him and his contract while allowing us to take almost nothing back for it to work.

Until that happens, a stretch provision is a possibility. It's not rocket science man. We want to unload rivers to land asik. We prefer not to use the provision but if it comes to that, it's a possibility.

That's the point. Someone will take a flyer on Rivers under his current deal. He is an improving player who can help a rotation, even if it is on a total non-contender. One of the other 29 teams will take him. Gordon is an albatross because of his current value and contract; Rivers is not.

With Houston's current desperation to clear space for bosh it is really starting to piss me off we threw in a 1st.
