get one of them styrofoam rings with net. A whole lot easier to reel a trout over the float than it is to deal with a net.

I agree with you on a float basket as opposed to a stringer but not on using the basket as a net. Treble hooks get stuck in those things like a MFer. I have a small surf fishing net and it is saved me from losing fish many times.

The net is a luxury that you can do without if you really don't want the extra stuff hanging off of you but for me it's a requirement.

Wade Fishing Essential Equip

For me, a boat. No way I'm wading out into the danger zone.

floating landing net
stringer/basket
something to carry extra lures
ziploc full of dead shrimps
stainless pliers/multitool
chacos

Get out early

So Alx and I are fishing the breakwaters in front of GI one day, catching trout. Dude who is seated on rocks is throwing spoon, gets hung, breaks off, had to walk all the way inshore to get another lure. walks back, climbs back on rocks, gets hung on first cast. Apparently dude had not brought extra lures again, so he wades out trying to get unhung. Just dumb. Runs into giant pile of jellyfish and had to quit. Really hard for us not laugh out loud at that shite.

what everyone else said. The floating landing net is optional, but very very helpful. One time I didn't have one out at Elmer's. First fish was a nice trout on topwater, spit the 3 treble hooks right as I was about to grab it. Next one, I got control of then dropped it before I got it on the stringer. These were nice trout, so I just manhandled everyone. Went home with a tore-up right hand.

Now I have a net, but it doesn't float. Occasionally I forget about it, then spaz out when it brushes against my leg and scares the crap out of me.

Keep it simple though. A few baits, floating basket and cheap pliers in a shirt pocket is all i carry out there now. (cheap pliers b/c I find even stainless will either corrode or get dropped somehow).

Crabs been closed on the beach at Elmer's since bp. Oddly, it's not closed on GI. Does not appear to be closed on the backside of Elmer's, only on the gulf beach. I was wondering if maybe they just forgot.

floating fish basket with a few feet of rope (in case a shark decides he wants to share your catch)

pliers with a lanyard to hang around your neck...

floating sunglasses strap...

shoes that won't come off if you are knocked down by a wave...

ultra waterproof sunscreen (I like bullfrog)...

make sure there is not a single part in your reel that will corrode in salt water...
