for you older guys, was Sammy Martin really good or did he just play because we really weren't that strong at the rb position in the 80s?

it's just weird to see a skinny white kid playing running back like that. Was he like the Jacob Hester of his time?

He was that good. He had speed and toughness. He did not have the power of Jacob Hester though.

I remember him more for his returns and catches for some reason. He definitely was not a bruiser like Hester. He was quick as hell.

Aside from being white, he had very little in common with Hester. As a runner, he was used much more like Holiday - a speed back with little power. He was also outstanding out of the backfield or even lining up as a receiver. In the pros, he was a KR and backup WR. He could fly. Not fast for a white guy but for any guy.

Graduated from De La Salle with Sammy. The DLS football teams were bad back then but Sammy was fun to watch put on a one man show and rack up plenty yards. One of the fastest players I've ever seen run with a football. He was good at LSU and gave 100% effort all the time. If a little bigger he could have been a superstar but got a couple years in the NFL because of his speed and work ethic. Will always remember the TD pass he caught from Hodson and ran straight down the field against A&M. Their players never dreamed he was that fast.

He had an incredible run against Ole Miss in Jackson one night. He scored a touchdown from about nine yards out, but there's no telling how many yards he actually covered with all the back & forth, starts & stops. He was something to watch.

Sammy was a very good situational back for LSU. Not big and durable enough for a feature back in the SEC. He made one of the best TD runs I ever saw, against MSU, of about seven yards. He had their defense grabbing air.

I couldn't believe a skinny white guy the same height and weight as I then was playing SEC football. Dude looked 40 years old too. Great ball player thought.

Trivia - You can see him lining up on the TV in the bar scene in the movie Cocktail with Tom Cruse.

We were strong. Just not as strong as we are now.

Dalton Hillard, Gary James, Harvey Williams all did well in NFL. Plus Eddie Fuller during that time. I could agrue that Sammy would have done better if we weren't so talented.

Like Mr. Sid said that went to school with Sammy. He was that good and lightning fast. I remember sitting in the old west end upper deck before the new renovations and was at that game when Hodson was a redshirt freshman and the Aggies came into Tiger Stadium ranked #1 in the nation. I remember seeing Sammy on a slant wide open on the middle of the field and thinking if Hodson can get the ball to him, It's a sure fire TD and that is what happened. Also a clutch receiver. Game against the Greenies in the Superdome and Mack Brown had the Greenies ready. Comes down to a 4th down with us having the ball and if we don't pick it up. Ballgame over. Mr. Cool catches the 4 or 5 yard pass from Hodson to pick up the 1st down and we go on to beat the Greenies on the game ending winning drive. Sammy was a great Tiger.

He was that good. The guy played in the NFL. He played a few years after I graduated but I would ride my mountain bike around campus and see him walking around. It always amazed me that this little prematurely bald white guy was burning people every weekend in the SEC. One of my all time favorites!

Sammy Martin was one of the fastest Tigers ever. Go to the 2:12 mark.

The fastest white man alive!

That's what my fellow students and I called him back in the day. Fun as hell to watch the defense underestimate his speed .

Ask Texas A&M and then Mickey Joseph.
