If there's one reason it irritates me, it's that it feeds the misconception that you have to buy overpriced, organic food in order to eat healthy.

Hence, the belief that poor families can't afford to eat healthy.

Box of corn flakes - 2.39
Gallon of milk - 3.29
Loaf of bread - 2.50
Lunch meat and cheese - 10.00
2lbs of bananas - 1.79
2lbs of apples - 2.00

Bam. There's your healthy breakfast and lunch for a week. $21.97.

Food stamps should be for the absolute necessities. Milk, bread, eggs, meat (not steaks and shite), water, etc. Not anything you can eat at the grocery.

Here in Alabama, convenient stores advertise that you can buy Red Bull with food stamps. Which is fricking ridiculous.

i just think that if you are "poor" enough require gubment assistance you shouldnt have the privilege to go to a premium grocery store and over spend the taxpayers money.

Why? Those premium grocery stores want free handouts from the government just as much as Wal-Mart.

They get the same amount of money whether they go to a premium place or not.. They may get less at that store than they would at Walmart.. But they aren't giving them more money to shop somewhere else..

It's less about the fact that they are poor and more about the fact that they are ok with being poor and using others money to fund their lives.

I agree with this, but the fact is they have the stamps so why does it really matter what they get with them?

im far less bothered by the fact that whole foods accepts them than i am that the state allows them to be accepted by a premium grocery store like whole foods etc

Do you realize how small of a fraction of a percent of the federal budget goes to helping needy with food stamps?

The amount spent helping the needy is a lot less than is spent helping the lazy. I guess since the overall cost of food stamps is small relative to the overall revenue generated by our tax dollars, we shouldn't be upset by people buying luxury items with our money.

Not a fan. Wish they would pay welfare in cash once a month.

Could care less where they spend it.

Because if you are poverty stricken to a point where the Government needs to assist you, then I would imagine you'd prefer to make that money stretch. Instead it is openly abused to buy all sorts of things and until the $$ is completely gone from those programs people will always misuse or abuse it.

Nonetheless, the Government will never save money because they will spend it else where. It bothers me most is the amount of entitlements out there for people who can do hardly anything to receive them.

A much smaller portion than those who should get them. I never had an issue paying my taxes until I saw how badly people abuse what I give them. Now I loathe it, for that simple reason. If it was a flat tax rate and I knew everyone paid their 15-20% regardless of their income, I'd be a much happier human. Then they could cheat all they wanted because they'd be defrauding themselves and not just (us).

Exactly.

It's actually more expensive to eat unhealthily. Especially when you throw fast food in the mix.

Buying fruits, vegetables, and uncooked meats is not expensive. It just takes some time and effort to actually prepare them.

These threads always comically underestimate how much food people need to survive. "OK kids everyone gets 1/3 a pound of ham and one apple. Try to make it last the week!"

As to OP, idgaf. They get x dollars. Whether they spend it at whole foods, and get a small amount of expensive food, or Wal Mart, and get a lot of cheap food, is really irrelevant to me. It's not like they get extra money for going to WF.
